The old 240 project. I pulled the 3 pt hydraulic lift housing today. Because it is broke in half. You can see it had a 1/4" steel plate welded along the bottom as a repair job. He claims its been that way 20 years or so.

I knew this was broke on the tractor before i purchased it. I had another one located before i made purchase of tractor. But what do you think caused it to break? I do not want to break the next one. If you want other pics of it or the new one let me know.

It's pretty much a guess at best isn't it? The obvious answer though, at least to me would be much the scenario of an implement of probably pretty good weight or even over the rating and a impact to the implement like running a plow into a heavy rock or a bushhog into a tree. It's not that heavy a set up on the 3pt so I'd sure want to know what it's rated for.

Have you inspected the bolt holes in the differential case? Are there any signs that the center bolts may have stripped out at one time? Looks to me like they could have come loose or weren't torqued properly. Probably from a great deal of weight on the 3pt with loose bolts or possibly a frozen relief valve putting full pump pressure on the piston and something had to give. Could also have been from a weak casting but that would be my last guess.

I would say there was a heavy load on the 3pt, load valve was wide open when he droped load it was way to fast. Then stopped it before the load hit the ground.

I don't recall we've ever seen that before. Maybe a tree fell on it or something. I would replace it and then not worry about it.

I don't think it points to a future problem at all, but as Gary noted I would make sure the threads are sound to hold down the new part.

I doubt you could ever break the replacement.

The center and rear bolts were a bit buggered up. I plan to retap the threads before installing new assembly. I thought possibly to heavy of an implement but i can't imagine that the hydraulics pressure would be enough to break it. I imagine a hard impact, or heavy load raised and maybe bouncing from going over bumps or something.

I'm not sure about the 240 but would guess it is about the same as a 220/226. They have a second relief valve called a surge relief valve. It is set about 300 lbs over the pressure relief valve. It is there to protect against implement bounce. Tremendous pressure is created with a heavy implement bounce. I believe the hardest hit on my three point through the years have come from implement bounce.

Could a backhoe without a sub-frame do this? Just a guess...

:confused2: if it lasted 20 years when you replace it i think you have nothing to worry about ---- to me it looks like some one had a chain to something and gave it a **** of a pull and broke the housing ;)

This morning on further inspection. It looks like 5 of the 6 holes in the transmission housing are cracked out , and all 6 holes had helicoil thread replacements. It looks like one of the holes was welded up some what at one time. I'm not sure what I am going to do next on this. Any ideas?
