    Default top link replacement

it has come time to replace the top link on my YM1700 but I didn't realize that there are an infinite number of sizes on the market. The body on the one that came on the tractor is 14.5" long. I'm guessing that if I can't find an exact match that anything close would suffice, such as one that is 12" long or 16" long? My local Tractor Supply has several that are close in length, but not exact. Would it be best to replace it with one a little "longer" or one a little "shorter"? thanks in advance for your good advice.

Is your Yanmar YM1700 Category 0 or Category 1? First make that determination.

    ( It is likely Category 0. )

upper link and lift arms are 3/4" and the lower arms are 7/8". not really certain about spacing. It appears to be a Cat I.

It sure does. You have me confused. That is not a top link. That is an adjustable side link. The one Hoye shows for the 1700 has a 7-1/2" tube and 14" to 19" hole to hole adjustment range. Yanmar Tractor Parts: ADJUSTABLE SIDE LINK

Here is the whole layout for clarification. You can click on the part references to look at them. Yanmar Tractor Parts: THREE_POINT_HITCH

In the Parts Diagram, Post #7, the Top Link is #4 and the (right) Adjustable Lifting Rod is #10.

Which of the two do you need to replace, #4 or #10 ?

Hoyes has 4 different body length top links listed. 9", 11", 12.5", and 16". One of those should work for you.
