Seal that rust on the wheels with Loctite Extend before touching up, and will be a semi-permanent, (looks good, lasts a long time), fix.

Spray it or wipe it with olive oil, and it will shine up for the pictures. That may bring more buyers, and a fresh spray before they get there so it smells good.
Yup, olive oil would work much better, leave wet. We had to go for large volume with diesel.

Ok, I'm just thinking out loud here and haven't come to any decisions. I'm still leaning toward putting all the effort toward composing a nice photo as suggested, instead of starting appearance renovation.

I went to HD and got spraycans of Rustoleum's rust-converter equivalent to Loctite Extend, plus Rustoleum's flat white for the wheels and a red that is a near-perfect color match. But I sprayed a sample of the red on a piece of cardboard and I see it is high gloss, unlike the paint on the tractor. Seems to me painting the hood glossy over dents is going to look as amateurish as it looks presently with a couple generations of faded red primer and weathered red spraycan in uneven blotches. (At least there is no rust). Making the dinged-up panels glossy will look equally bad, it seems to me.

Related point - I don't think I will shine it up with diesel or olive oil. That doesn't seem right, to do anything that would make a future repaint job not adhere well. There are too many creases and tiny crumples that would be impossible to decontaminate before repainting.

Also, I don't have a decent location to paint in. The tractor stall is open-front with a century of dust everywhere ready to fall on fresh paint. (old photo when a peacock visited).

Question - is the rust-conversion 'paint' suitable as primer for an entire wheel? Will it adhere over the areas with good paint?

....a red that is a near-perfect color match....

Do you know off-hand what color that is? I'm curious if they make it in a satin or flat finish. I've got some areas of mine that I'd like to clean up a bit, but, like you, don't want to have a glossy hood with a matte finish everywhere else.

Art supply stores have an array of "specialty" spray paints that I might investigate if I remember to care enough at the right time... ;)

Rustoleum Gloss Protective Enamel
7762 Sunrise Red
2066 77628 2

This is way too reflective. We need to look for the same color in satin gloss.

This color is a near match to an area I cleaned under the hood.

Most of the cowl is weathered and looks like clouded clearcoat over Yanmar's red. After I used polishing compound to clean off a thin mist of rattlecan 'touchup' from the cowl, there was one spot on the left side of the cowl (last photo) where this polishing revealed the same red I found under the hood.

I must be missing a lot here. How is removing olive oil any different than removing wax to prep for a paint job? Rustoleum has a cream-colored paint that will match your wheels close enough for a quick touch up.

No, you're just a step ahead of me. I don't know how to remove wax or oil; I just recognize that this step is important.

Thanks for the mention of that Cream color. I got home with the spraycan of white and realized it was far from a match. These wheels need total repaint, especially the inner sides. Pulling the wheels, masking the tires and valve stems, prime, paint, paint tires etc - are all steps I had hoped to avoid by simply selling the thing.

I'm still not convinced that if I do a respectable job of refurbishing it, I'll improve its price enough to pay for my time. Also it is harvest season so I don't have time to mess with it until things quiet down.

"What do I need to do to sell this thing?"

Asked and answered. Don't know what else to tell you. Not talking refurb, just lipstick on a pig for a photo shoot. As you said, if you can get them there it will sell itself with it's ability. Just make sure it runs well.

It runs like new. I wish the early owners hadn't left it outdoors for years and dinged up every panel.

The only thing I can think of to 'lipstick' it, is to photograph it wet and sparkly right after washing it. I've seen this done effectively in CL ads.

Minor detailing like you do on a car isn't going to help. Any use of paint (short of repainting) is going to compound the mismatched mess it already shows.

And of course I should photograph it in a gorgeous setting as you and rmully advised. I had overlooked that aspect.

Like everyone said it is presentation. If it was me I would give it a good spray bomb to cover up all the different colours and what not get rid of that pipe above the muffler and the weight. Park it by a nice fence or on a freshly cut lawn and it will look a million times better. On a side note another alternative to diesel or olive oil ( which I imagine would be quite pricey) use Fluid Film, as a protectant this stuff is awesome and it shines up a faded paint job very nice, just spray or pour a little on and rub it in with a rag. My pickup has a can of WD-40, Fluid Film, bug spray, and bug spray in the back door pocket. Oh did I mention bug spray. :) sorry I got off topic a little.
