I need help identifying a small plastic bottle, almost round in shape that sits atop the engine just under the hood. It is located in front of the gas tank.

I just bought this YM240 and the bottle is empty with no cap on it.

Could it be a reservoir for starter fluid?

The 1700 Yanmar I owned had a bottle filled with fuel to be used in place of glow plugs. The fuel is heated prior to the cylinder? There was a chrome button on the dash for the heater. You may search the net for a manual.

Good luck.

bassfishrman:

if it look kind like a sports drink bottle it's the over flow/reserve for the radiator.

If it looks like this diagram, it holds a small amount of diesel for the Thermostart system. There should be a cap and a little splash shield in the top.

Here is an old thread describing the Thermostart system including photos.

Now, I have a question - has anyone replaced the old style tank with the later one that is replentished from the injector return line? Any reason why this won't work?

If the cap is missing......check your old prescription bottle caps. The ones that snap on. I used one on my YM1700.

I did! I have a YM1301D that has the refilling type reservior, and a YM1110D that had the manual refilling type. I ordered an extra for the YM1301D and put it in place of the original on the YM1110D. Connecting hoses turned out to be a bit of a challenge because the 1301D used a larger diameter hose for the injector return line so the reservoir needed the larger hose. I ended up using a couple of adapters and clamps. It looks a bit jury-rigged, but it does work. Of course, I have never used the thermo-start since because it just seems too close to the paper air filter element for my comfort.

Now if you are going to do this on a YM240, it is possible that it already has the larger hose, so it may not be a problem. While you are doing all this, I highly recommend replacing all of those fuel lines.

I'll try to remember to get a photo of it tonight and post tomorrow.

yep, sounds like thermostart bottle to me.

and yes, i've installed the later model botle. seems to work OK. but then again, it's hard to tell, kinda warm now to really need it.. but nevertheless, the bottle does fill jus fine. -arthr

Here's a photo of the automatic refilling bottle I put on my YM1110D.
