I just bought a starter for my YM165 tractor. The guy says it is PN S114-230.
The starter I got wont engage the flywheel the pinion gear doesn't stick out far enough. It is also a 9 tooth pinion gear. I have heard that these tractor take 9 tooth or a 11 tooth. How can I tell which starter works for my tractor. I measured the distance from the edge of my gear housing to the edge of the flywheel teeth an it is ~.895" The pinion gear of the starter when fully engaged wont reach. Does someone have any idea's. Do I have the wrong starter the Yanmar PN 124070-77010 crosses to the starter I got from the local guy.
Also I have 2TR13A enigine.

It came from the factory with a S114-219 starter. It is an 11 tooth. Some 9 tooth starters will work because they are offset differently. Some of the 9 tooth aftermarket starters that are being sold as a "Yanmar replacement" are, as you have said, not ling enough to catch the flywheel correctly. I know this because we have a whole pile of them here now that we can't sell for that reason :( .

The starter that came on the the tractor was a S114-219 as Aaron said, part#124060-77011, this number was superseded to # 124070-77010 S114-230 both of the starters have 11 teeth. The price dropped after the supersedure from almost $ 600.00 to a little over $ 300.00. You should be able to get your starter rebuilt or buy a rebuilt one.
