I got the JD 790 when I bought our current property. So far we've used it for mowing, moving wood, moving snow and jump starting my car. The tractor was used - and not gently - so a lot of the issues I am experiencing it is possible that had the tractor been stored/covered these wouldn't be problems.
My #1 issue with this is that the manual goes by serial number range. My tractor is in the first SN range, but requires the manual for the next batch of Serial Numbers. This made maintenance a little aggravating because it took me a while to figure out why the diagrams didn't match the underside of the tractor.
Value only got three stars because green paint is apparently incredibly expensive - to the point that JD and JD accessories cost approximately twice as much as every other brand.
The dealer I've worked with is horrible. I'm a woman going into a tractor store looking for parts, so the guys behind the counter do their best to convince me that I don't want that, I want this.
The one time I listened to them I made a mess for myself. The 790 specifically requests Low Viscocity hydraulic fluid, the guy behind the counter convinced me I needed the regular stuff. So I got it, and put it in. Now I am going to have to change out five gallons of hydraulic fluid before winter. They also gave my husband difficulty when he wanted to buy a JD auger to put on our County Line attachment.
There are also a wide variety of parts that are no longer available for this model, which makes sense because it's 10 years old.
When we get the money we are going to try to sell this tractor so we can put a down payment on a New Holland.
