While mowing the other day, the tractor simply stopped moving. Engine runs fine, blades spin, but forward and reverse do not work. if i step on the pedal to move forward or backward, there is some strange noise (low muffled grinding) from under the seat and the tractor does not move. It has 160 hrs on it and I bougth it 5 years ago throguh Lowes. Please Help!

Look underneath and above the mowing deck in the frame area, there is a drive belt from engine to rearend, sounds like your drive belt broke.

check the fluid level and check for leaks on the tranny. good luck. If it is not on the dipstick use rottella t 15w40. the grinding noise sounds like the pump cant pick up fluid. also, change the filter if thats the case.

the 1042 has a "factory sealed" hydro - oil change is possible but somewhat involved, usually requiring major sheet metal removal and mebbe even tranny removal. You won't see a hydro oil dipstick, filter, etc.
If motion drive belt is still OK, next chk the driven tranny pulley for input shft splines not messed up.
If you have been pulling heavy loads or have serious hills/inclines to negotiate whilst using the machine, not good. The LT1042 is designed as a light duty lawn tractor - it's hydro tranny won't take a beating and keep on ticking.

I agree that the drive belt is the first place to check. Also, I have seen a case where the parking brake stayed on when the brake pedal was released. If you look form the rear underneath of the machine, on the right hand side you will see a disc that spins and uses little pucks that a lever pulls forward to tighten. I've seen that lever stuck causing the brake to stick. Just a thought

thanks a lot for the responses. I'll check the belts again, I have no hills and only 1.3 acres so I hope it can handle that without blowing out the tranny!
I've also had backfiring when I shut it down since day one. Its fine by me but it scares the bajesus out of my kids sometimes!.

Thanks again

The backfiring means the carburetor is out of adjustment, too rich. I'd check that, to help with the backfiring.

If it's a Brigg engine, the valve need adjusting.

Danmck2,

Can you let us know what you've found when you do find what's wrong? Someone stole my GT2544 and I don't think I'm going to get another one. I'd love to but am leary about spending that much money, so I'm thinking get the LXT 1042.

Best of luck with your 1042 and

Regards,
Kerry Elizabeth O

before turning engine off, let it idle/cool down for a minnit or so. See if that doesn't help....
