Mow along the highway

Where I live, if you don't mow it yourself, it most likely won't get mowed at all. As far as I know, the state highways are mowed by crews, but county and township roads are not. I have a mulching kit on mine, so it doesn't put very much grass on the roadway. I also hate when people shoot grass all over the road. The farmers with brush hogs can't really control it, but some people do seem to launch the grass on the roadway with their riding mower on purpose.

BTW, anyone have any idea why I don't get email notifications when someone posts? I have it enabled, I think.

Quoting myself to tie a ribbon this query. Turns out the "new" AT&T is blocking TBN email, and not even putting them in the spam or trash folder. Grrr!

I'm switching my TBN response email to one on my own server. Time to punt AT&T.

A tire is the worst thing to hit with a rotary cutter. A hit on one of them almost always tears up something. Ken Sweet

Could be worse. You oughtta see what happens when you hit one with the blade of a feller/buncher. Ouch.

Cutting with a rotary cutter along a highway is insane. That machine can easily hit anything thrown out of a car and send it through a window or windshield like an artillery shell and kill someone, or even someseveral people.

Flail mowers should always be used when people are around. Light duty, which have knives, are for turf. Heavy duty, which have hammers to break stemmy material, are appropriate for this roadside job. A flail will not launch missiles at people and cars. When people and easily damaged property are not present, a rotary mower or cutter makes more sense than a flail. I am trying to avoid using inappropriate language here, but I cannot emphasize enough how bad of an idea it is to use a rotary cutter along a highway. You are not only putting yourself at risk of being sued for every last penny you and your family will ever see, you could easily kill innocent people. You may as well be doing target practice with the targets on one side of the highway, you and your gun on the other, while using a gun which has random time delay that you can never anticipate.

I have never seen anything other than rotary cutters in use by MODOT or our county highway department. I use the same chain guards front and back as they use and have never had anything get past them. I do agree that mowers should no be used in the presence of cars though and shut mine down on the rare occasion someone comes down my road as this is standard practice for everyone I know besides MODOT and the county.

Tell that to the MA DOT. That's what they are mowing with, at least on 495, and up here in Maine it is contracted out. 95 is being mowed right now whith a pair of good sized Deere hauling 3-gang rotaries.

I mow my roadside as part of the lawn for 250 yards, and then a few times a years I mow under the adjoining overpass. There is no debris on the lawn portion and easy fix in the other stuff? Stop mowing when a car comes!

I am humored by the offense taken by someone blowing grass in the road. It blows right back after the first car.

Now, blowing the grass in the road when I am going by on the bike, that is a jack-slappable offense.

If the grass is being blown in the road, then so is anything and everything else the mower runs over.

So I'm not sure the offense is as much about the grass, as it is the prospect of having yourself or your vehicle peppered with other flying shrapnel.

But yes, for a car enthusiast that may have just had their ride detailed, and perhaps is on their way to a show/meet, fresh wet grass does represent a particular aggravation.

Thus where good sense and courtesy are a handy thing. Even though I now have a rear discharge, I still disengage the clutch when a car comes. I know how irritating it is to have it done to me, nor do I need some moron finding an excuse to get a preexisting issue repaired by me.

As for the detailing, such is life on public roads. Whether it be my tractor trailer, my Barnyard Cadillac, or my streeter, washing is sure to bring on an open hydrant, fresh calcium in a construction site that wasn't there yesterday, or a hail of swarming bees. (That one was messy. What are farm bees worth each?) Such is life on public roads.

Completely agree.

As far as the other,
Bees, bugs, bird poop, etc... an act of God.
Flying grass, rocks, beer cans, glass... an act of a moron.
