Each track consists of 2 x 6in conveyor belting tied together with these track plates with integrated guides that run between the tires. These plates go between the belting and the ground, so I should have no issues with traction, except for any side sliping on ice. The track make up is very similar to a J5 Bombadier or muskeg tractor, except l will be running dual tires so the track locators will ride between the tires, not on the outside as in single tire applications. As well I will be adding additional pieces to ensure the tracks stay on during turns as tracks have a way of riding up on pnematic tires (especially if low on air). Just to get the tracks completed, I have 320 more holes to drill, 160 45degree cuts to make, 80 x 5 minutes of deburring on each track shoe, about 4 hours of grinding and welding on the drive gears and painting all 120 track shoes. Then I need to make up a jig to space out the shoes on the belting. This project is tying up both my garage and shed so I can do nothing else until it is finished.

David:

You are a patient and determined man. I'm with Cyril in that the monotony of making the same part over and over again would be my downfall.

Okay, that makes sence. Sounds like you got your work cut out for you. :)

You can't just casually mention that you build a small tracked vehicle without giving more details!!!

Pictures?
How big?
What did you use for tracks?
What's it powered by?
What do you use it for?

I am with Iplayfarmer. tell us more about it, when was it completed, what problems did you have with it and how were they fixed.......As far as the monotony, I usually get a system going where I am doing two things at once, like with a Horizontal bandsaw I can put a piece on and while it is cutting I can grind the previously made piece. I am a good day-dreamer so I have already put a 100 hours on the tracked vehicle and its not even made yet.

I can relate to daydreaming. Usually before I start a project I have spent hours building and rebuilding in my head. The fun part is when the real deal comes out looking like what I had imagined.

Hey Dave,

Just an idea that occurred to me. Crimping (or splaying) either the ends or the center of the track cleats might provide a small amount of sideways traction. That or notching them with an angle grinder.

To Iplayfarmer
The small tracked vehicle is a 1/6 scale of a 450 B Case crawler tractor. The entire tracked assembly drives. It is powered by electric wiper motors, I made the entire track to scale forming the groussers , idlers drive gears ,sub frame etc. If the sheet metal was to be finished it would look like the real thing. Just because it is smaller the detail and quality that I put in is very high. At the time I wrote to the Case company about my project and they wished me success. So I understand what a half scale track vehicle should entail. Right now it is under my bench collecting dust.
I now also play farmer which has equipment big enough to ride on or roll over. If could post pics if any one was interested.
