If could post pics if any one was interested.

I don't think anyone's interested. We don't really like machinery or custom fabrication around here.

To Iplayfarmer
The small tracked vehicle is a 1/6 scale of a 450 B Case crawler tractor. The entire tracked assembly drives. It is powered by electric wiper motors, I made the entire track to scale forming the groussers , idlers drive gears ,sub frame etc. If the sheet metal was to be finished it would look like the real thing. Just because it is smaller the detail and quality that I put in is very high. At the time I wrote to the Case company about my project and they wished me success. So I understand what a half scale track vehicle should entail. Right now it is under my bench collecting dust.
I now also play farmer which has equipment big enough to ride on or roll over. If could post pics if any one was interested.

hello
David Devuono, you might want to be careful of those wheels. I got some of those type a while ago for a wagon with two 55gal drums of water on it. After I put it together I tested it by hand with some water(not full). If I turned, the side pressure bent the hub. My wheels were rated at 340# apiece or something. I am not saying that the wheels you got are built like the way mine were but mine looked exactly the same. I did also have the bearings slide because they were not seated against anything. On mine the hub is made of two pieces of sheet metal with a short section of pipe welded on each, in which the bearings are pressed. With it just bolted together it tends to bend. I will try to upload a drawing what I am talking about. I am just telling my experience with those type of tires. If your tires won't get any side stress it may not be a problem or yours might be built better. I also thought that it the tire got low or had a lot of weight the hub could cut the sidewall near the bead.
I just thought I warn you because I'd hate to see that machine fail from weak wheels.

How many of the tires did you use, I aggree they are a compromise but with 16 of them on the ground they will only need to support 65lbs each. The bearings will need to be changed to double sealed bearings at $3 a piece x 2 per wheel but I plan to run it with stock bearings for the first year. I am going to change out the bearings on the tires that tension the track first as they will have 140 lbs a piece on them.

Hey Dave,

Just an idea that occurred to me. Crimping (or splaying) either the ends or the center of the track cleats might provide a small amount of sideways traction. That or notching them with an angle grinder.

I am not too concerned with sideways slipping. In fact I am working each track pad so that it is streamlined in the sideways position to aid in turning. Each of the 120 trackpads is taking about 20-25 minutes each to build, not including painting. I need about two more good days to complete the tracks.

I got to give you credit for sticking with it. There's no way I could have built all those track pads without getting bored and having to find something else to work on. Well done...even if it is a couple of days early.

Hello,
I had just four wheels on the cart and they were returned.
Due to the quantity of wheels you have bearing the weight, the wheels may not be a problem.

I'd just thought I'd make known my experience so someone else didn't need to make the same mistake.
Changing the bearings sounds like a good idea.
Good Luck on you machine, It looks fun to build, although I would agree with what Cyril said and I'd probobly get bored and then it would never get done.

I think my problem with the wheels will be, due to not being solid the track guides may try to ride up on the wheels, especially is a wheel should loose some air. I will be using at least three different items to keep the tracks on. 1- Central track guides on the Grousers run between the wheels, 2-metal guides to keep the track guides aligned at the drive gear and 3-outboard bumpers to restrict sideways movement.

A shot of some 60 track plates I made up on the weekend. Also a shot of a track mock up I am using to shape my drive gears. This side will be contacting the ground. I have come to the realization that I need the gear teeth to come to a point to ensure the track will engage even with some debris in the tracks
