Dead auto darkening helmet

I have a Miller helmet (part number 217290) that I haven't used in a few months. Took it out of its bag and it wouldn't turn on. Replaced the battery, but no go. Left it in the sun for a few minutes, but still nothing. Any suggestions for trouble shooting, or is this a case of looking for a new helmet?

I've got a Miller, not sure of the model number, but it has 2 batteries, one on each side.

Not sure what you mean by "turn on". Are you saying that it won't darken when you strike an arc?

My 'el cheepo' will auto darken with a simple flick of a cigarette lighter.
I use that as my simple test prior to every welding session.

I believe those helmets need to be stored in direct sunlight to keep the batteries charged.
Otherwise frequant usage will keep charged by the welding brightness.
An earlier helmet I had simply died as it was kept in a dark location.
I dismantled to find that there was a typical 3 vold lithium (?) battery installed and always planned to replace that, but never happened.
Added to my 'to do list'

Inside the helmet is a control panel for setting shade and sensitivity and an "On" button. When you hit the button it will darken for a second and you know it is working. I normally just hit the button and start welding. It didn't darken when I struck an arc.

This model has a single external battery.

I believe youre right. I store mine in indoor ambient light, but Iv taken to putting it out in the sun a few minutes prior to welding. Seems to work ok that way. :thumbsup:

I would be curious as to what you find out as well. Did you make sure the battery contacts are good and clean? No broken wire that kind of easy stuff to cause you grief.
