Deutz Allis 5220 w FEL and Backhoe
Short Recap.

I bought a Deutz Allis 5220 Tractor with FEL and BH. 600 hours on it. Decided since it was new to me to change all the Fluids. Priced out the HST and HYD filters. $225 for both. I matched up wix filters( on my own since there was no cross for those). Changed engine oil and filter, Then Changed Hyd/Drive oil with my filters. When I was all done. Tractor wouldn't drive right. Weak, no power to wheels and PTO would spin slow. Tried to Bleed it, It got better then no go. I said ut oh, Burned out the HST with the mixed filters. Put the originals on. No better. Tried couple days later seemed ok. I finally broke down and bought the $225 filters (Both). Put them in, Worked kinda ok, little while later no go.

I was able to catch a peek and noticed the shaft out of the clutch was spinning slow.

Hmmm. Took off the FEL and BH. Split the tractor and Guess what????

A F'en mouse nest stuck in the clutch pressure plate. The pressure plate wasn't releasing all the way.

What we figured. Behind the bell housing with a open area before the HST pump. Some how the mice got in there. The made a nest. Well there is 4 quarter size hole between this area and the clutch area. They are access holes for a socket to unbolt the HST pump. The more we used it, the more that must of gotten sucked into clutch area. It was only luck of the draw if it would release enough to work that day.

The friction plate looked like new, the pressure plate with about 30 min of cleaning look great. Cleaned everything up and it works great. It works better then when I first got it.

It wasn't a new mouse nest as it seemed like alot of rotted material. I got a shoe box worth out of it and alot more blew out with a blow gun.

Well lesson learned.

It's great that you got it figured out, but it was a shame that all that work had to be done because of a few little mice. My dad parks his riding mower underneath a shed when not in use. One spring he cranked it up (first time that spring) and the warmer the engine got, the more the engine started smoking. He thought it was blown somehow until he found a mousenest underneath the engine cover! Lucky it didn't catch fire with him. There have been lots of other stories on the forum here of the troubles that mice and squirrels have caused with equipment stored in a barn or shed. Add your story to them!

One heck of a spot for a mouse. Last spring i started my JD L118 and all the sudden pink stuff started coming out the grill. I opened the hood and sure enough there was a mouse nest on the battery. It was a rather fresh one, still loose, starting the engine blew the whole nest out! Glad it wasn't worse. But now I always check under the hood before starting the lawn mower, just to be sure the mouse hasnt returned.

It's good to hear you got it fixed1

Just a little safety reminder...when cleaning up mouse nests, etc, be advised the possibility exists of Hantavirus being present. It's rare but it can be can be a killer. Considering the consequences, error on the side of caution! Mortality estimates in Canada and United States range from 33 per cent to 50 per cent. The nephew of a guy I worked with contracted it a few years ago (just walking through a grain elevator), his doctor didn't diagnose it but we had just had a talk about it at one of our safety meetings and when nephew was talking to his uncle, he described his symptoms and uncle twigged to the fact that it was exactly what we were told the symptoms of Hantavirus were. He went to his doctor, told him about his conversation with uncle, doctor checked for it and he did have it. He survived, but if he hadn't found out he had it, who knows? Anyways, there's a nice little write up about it is here (and other places on the net) http://www.capitalhealth.ca/nr/rdon...jxui3jjsf5bqurd2xsf4g/hantavirusfactsheet.pdf

Great point. We tend to forget that rodents have caused more deaths of people than warfare has caused--- ever. The Black Plague was spread by rodents, Hanta virus and literally dozens to hundreds of other diseases are spread by rodent feces and urine. Some are really nasty that literally liquify your internal organs causing you go bleed from every orifice. Yuck.

Racerboy, half way down your post i thought it was going to be that the HST filter you matched up was the issue and was caught off guard when you found a mouse nest in the clutch housing. Wow, that's a new one on me. Thanks for sharing the story.

I posted the final outcome cause most of the time we find similar cases and they don't post what the final outcome was. Well I was happy that this one was a low cost.
