hello y'all. new to forum & yanmar. i currently running older gravely walk behinds
& i'm looking for a 4 wheel garden tractor not just a mower. i found a yanmar 146 for sale with a mower deck ( not sure which one ) & a front mount blade. i spent the last hour reading up on the 146 after doing a search on this forum & have a few questions. the tractor is in great shape. no rust or bent sheet metal. tires are good. what do you suppose this might be worth? what are it's weak points?
besides the typical stuff is there anything specific to look for related to this model. in reading it looks like parts are available but can be hard to find. if it's hard to find parts for i'll probably pass on it. i saw yanny's post on his newest find & he mentions how rare that tiller is. are there other tillers that would work.
gardening is one of my concerns. but since i have the gravelys i do have tillers.
what other attachments are out there. also-the farther east you go the more gravely tractors & attachments you see. once you get past western mo & eastern kansas they start getting scarce. is there a geographic pattern with the yanmars?
just talked to the owner. no rear pto. ym146 deck

Yannyman might have better info but I will give it a shot. I am pretty sure finding a pto to add is going to be very tough to find. I have the 146 with the older deck. You can tell by how many wheels are on the deck.....if you have 4 wheels you have the "newer/better" deck according to some....if the deck has 2 rear wheels and 1 roller up front then it is the ycm48 deck which is considered the older. I have the older deck and so far have been pleased with it. Rebuilding the decks are not that hard to do and fairly in range regarding price to buy the parts.

I have a craftsman mower which has an automatic transmisson with a 42" deck...it is more agile and faster (I use 2nd gear with 146 -plus the powershift ranges) to change from slow to fast speeds....for my small yard the craftsman gets the edge for ease of use or convience.....
When I am mowing down on my land and don't want to haul my tractor and cutter...the 146 is my mower of choice.....can take the heavier grass better than my craftsman and being a more "commercial grade" mower I feel better chance I will not tear it up.

PTO is 2000 rpm if you were to find one. Not as many attachments readily available (used)......several other companies make compatible implements just need to have patience in finding them. CAT 0 lift

So far I have found the parts I have needed to fix it....but these have not been made since the 80's so keep that in mind.

Price.......I have seen them go from a low of $600 to a high of $2000......average probably around $1000 to $1300 for what you have described based on the area and time of year it is being sold.

All the above is my opinion and that and 50cents may buy you a cup of coffee :D

I have enjoyed the 146 for what I need it for.....heavier duty mower to use when I don't want to haul my tractor and also a backup when needed to mow my small home yard. Good luck hope this helps.

as i said it has the ym146 mower deck. is that good or bad? he's asking 1K firm since he just lowered his price. of course that is always subject to change. i've been looking for an 18G or 20G gravely tractor since i already have so many gravely attachments when the yanmar caught my eye.

Sorry but I was not 100% sure you knew what deck you had based on the info you provided........ym146 is not the deck model number...ym146 is the tractor designated model number.

The correct model number for your deck (if it has the 2 wheels in back and single antiscalp roller on the front) is YCM 48 not ym146. If it is the deck with 4 wheels it is a BM48.

That being said....I have that deck (ycm48) and it works fine. What are your intent with this mower?? The BM48 deck has 4 wheels and supposed to be better. Grease zerks on spindles on top, etc.....ycm48 is probably more old school....may have zerks but bearings used are sealed so not a big issue either way. I have taken down and rebuilt my deck with no prior experience. Was not a big deal.

The YCM48 deck has been around a long time. It is comparable to the case mower deck used on many older case lawn mowers. It will mow grass fine. Not alot of adjustments in height compared to others.....most of the quick adjustment features will only allow the front of the deck to be raised a limited amount compared to my craftsman.

So far I have had no issues with belts coming off or breaking.

I forgot to mention one other thing. The front pto clutch is electric...these and the switch on the deck to the clutch can cause some problems. The clutches to my knowledge are no longer available so if it breaks you would need to find another used one or have it rebuilt. Gary Jamieson is a pro on these units so he as well as some of the sponsers could help in repairing or replacing the unit.

Maybe you have already stated it .......how many hours?? Taken care of I have heard of these yanmar diesels easily going 4000 plus hours without any major issues.
$1000 seems like a fair price for a mower and front blade.....has it been stored inside or out?? Pictures always help.

Good luck

i plant to use it for mowing a mostly level 3/4 acre, pulling a utility cart, & if i cab find the attachments, plowing& tilling a 75'x 125' garden, & pushing or blowing snow.
the owner told me it had a ym146 deck. that's why i posted that info. i know nothing about these tractors. i liked it's look liked that it was diesel.

Find out when the last time the deck was rebuilt. Find out the last time the front PTo was serviced. Find out how many hours it has. Find out if the safety switches are still intact and working as well as the hour meter, and dash warning lights. Find out if the warning buzzer still works.

If the wiring hasn't been messed with and the deck and front PTO are nice nice shape and have been serviced or rebuilt, $1000 isn't a bad price.

Options available:

Front and rear wheel weights and chains (rear)

Front mount Snowblower

Front mount snow plow

3 different belly mowers (YCM 48, YCM 60, BM48)

Rear mount 43" tiller.

The rear PTO can be had at Jamieson Tractor when he gets them. The 3 point hitch is the PIA and you'll probably have to buy a tractor with one on it in order to get one.

I cut my yard with the YCM 60 currently. I use 3rd gear on the rear, 1st on the Powershift for most of it. 2 and 2 for the slower spots. Next year I'll be using the BM48 after I rebuild it and then I'll probably cut faster.

There seems to be alot of YM12X/YM14X up and down the East Coast. But I've seen a few out in the mid west and West coast on the internet for sale.

I too liked the looks and that they are powered by a diesel. It has the rear locking differential (lever on the right side just behind where your foot rest) to get your out of trouble when you need a little more traction. I live in the south so no help on its capability to push snow or using a snow blower. Mowing 3/4 acre no problem, pulling a cart no problem, with the 3pt hitch and pto - tilling should be no problem. At this point mine has only been used as a mower so I don't know what all it is capable of at this point.

I am also considering buying and restoring a Massey Ferguson older model lawn/garden tractor. Many of these older models come with tillers, blowers, etc for around $1000-1200. It may be another way you could go. Most of those are gas powered though.

Good luck.

it was rougher than the photo implied. if it had more attachments i still might consider it. there are 2 yanmar powered john deere 420's for sale too but they are pricey!! i did find a yanmar 4' tiller for sale. i think i'll go back to looking for a gravely 18G or 20G since i already have so many gravely attachments.
