And here I am just wishing for a window. Maybe one day. Should this really be in the rural living forum? :)

Still seems wasteful. I've worked in IT for 16 years. I work all kinds of hours but my official hours are two days in the office and three days from home. I'm at my most productive working from home: no commute, no cubicle drive bys, heck, no shower if I don't want to.

I'd be willing to bet if you took the pool table, video games and Nerf toys away from those nerds that they'd get a lot more done in less time. Heck, my wife does programming and I've seen her sit in one place for twenty hours working on a project. It's not healthy but when it's time to work, we work. They shouldn't need anything more than a paycheck to get into the zone - ok - maybe ritalin.

A little less carrot and a little more stick.

My 2 cents.

You're right they might get more done.... at another company. Some of this is about attracting creativity and brilliance to want to work for you. Google has been about coming up with fresh ideas and doing things that no one has done before... not just grinding out code. Someone has to have the ideas first. If you think the environment kills productivity what about the insistence that engineers at Google get one day a week to work on their own pet projects? They are working 4 and getting paid for 5.... These pet projects are some of what you used to see on Google Labs - Explore Google's New Ideas (which is actually winding down these days)

On the other hand there sure was a lot of waste in the .com era.

Confucius said: "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."

I'm a self employed artist, and I don't work, but I play about 80 hours a week. Think of it as getting paid good money to ride around on your CUT all day!

Hypothectical events during a WORK day at GOOGLE: I ate too much for breakfast, think I'll go for a swim to work off the added pounds. Swimming made me hungry again--lunch sounds good. Now I feel bloated, perhaps a movie or a message or both will help relieve my indigestion. Darn, I fell asleep after the movie and massage, and it's 10 till FIVE --yes 4:50 p.m. Well, tomorrow's another day. Maybe I can get something accomplished tomorrow. Sure hope my BMW has enough gas in the tank to allow me to go for a spin at the BEACH. Maybe check out the BABES there. I need to relax--I had a rough day at work. Hopefully tomorrow will be easier.:laughing::cool2::drink: I almost forgot, I have to start preparing my personal resume.Tractor work is so BORING compared to the JOB just described.:laughing:

I expect that Google work-style will have a limited life ... prob about the time a serious competitor comes along and/or their profits aren't increasing at the rate investors think they should and/or their stock price begins to lag.

I imagine Enron employees' work-lives weren't too far behind Google's. I'm not saying Google is the next Enron, just that all exceptions to the rule tend to revert to the norm ... eventually. Or, "If it seems too good to be true ..."

I've been inside Google headquarters in the last few weeks, and I can vouch that it is very nice. I can also vouch that there is a lot of work that gets done, and people are happier working longer hours there.

Free lunch is a no brainer. 30 minutes for a free lunch vs. 70 minutes to go out to lunch pays for itself each and every day.

The place is also family friendly, and I saw many kids eating lunch there with the parents.

The company I work for has started adopting some of the Google practices (changing the work place, adding free drinks, massage areas, etc.). It is nowhere near as nice as Google, but it is nicer than what it was.

Rather than Google being outside the norm and reverting to the norm eventually, I think that Google is the new norm that other companies are adapting to.

Pay scale wise, my guess is that Google average pay is around $60-$75 per hour including all of the perks, so about average for the industry, maybe a little higher.
