I've put 124 hrs on my 2011 DK35 HST since receiving it at the end of March. My experience is similar to grsthegreat. It will sometimes squeal in reverse when it has been used for an hour or so in hot weather. Even then the squeal is sporadic.
My previous tractor was a geared model. The HST is much easier to operate and useful for my needs. As gkh7890 says, it is better for precision work. It is much less scarey working close to buildings, on hills, etc. I now mow the lawn with the tractor and 6' finishing mower instead of the old riding mower.
I think an HST is safer for most of us casual users with small acreages. I would not want to go back to a geared tractor, squeal or no squeal.
