Is it necessary to disconnect negative battery cable prior to changing Glow Plug Timer switch on NH 1320?

Thank you

It is certainly good practice to do so. Is it necessary? Probably not. I have changed several dozen of those relays over the years and never removed a battery cable specifically because of the relay swap. It doesn't hurt to remove both cables and clean the posts and terminals periodically. If you haven't, now is a good time.

RickB, Thanks for info. I recently cleaned post, terminals etc so I guess I ok to change timer only.

every time i have changed a glow plug timer i also change the glow plugs because they are most likely getting close to burning out

Guys, I have an '03 TC40, I bought the new timer, can someone give me an idea of where the timer is on the machine, so I dont have to start taking to much stuff off to find it?

You have to remove the left side cowling under the steering wheel. There are two bolts under the steering wheel and two under the hood on the firewall. Once the left side black cowling is removed, look for a matching timer that looks like the one you just bought. There's only one like that in there.

Wait until the engine (and muffler) cools off because you will be working in close proximity. Right behind the muffler on the firewall there are three bolts. The top bolt stays in. It is attached to the top blue fiberglass dash panel. The lower two bolts hold the cowling in place. Those and the two under the steering wheel are all you have to remove to lift the cowling out. You will see several relays and on the bottom row of four larger relays on the left side you'll find your glowplug timer. Also, expect everything to be very dusty. It always is. Fight the urge to rinse out the area with water. Don't do it. Use compressed air or a brush on the dust, but not water. Water will cause all kinds of problems.

Jim, Perfect description of the removal process, dust and all. You left off the rat nest I found in there too. Reminds me of the space behind my old Ford 2000's instrument cluster.

Anyway, I discovered that one of the threaded ferrules spun in the plastic of on the lower firewall bolt. I managed to get the cowling off, but am wondering how to go about fixing the threads for this bolt.

Any ideas. That existing ferrule was either crossed at the factory, or someone crossed it in the past. It was deformed and actually pulled itself into the firewall and remained there after I got the bolt out. I don't want to reuse that piece when I do fix it.

Thanks for your advice.

Mark, you can remove the ferrule and then glue it back in place with epoxy, but the last time I had my panels off, one of my ferrules was corroded and spun. Now my panel is held on with three bolts instead of four. Lube up the remaining ones and put it back with one less bolt is my suggestion.
