We have a county-owned/contract operator "recycler," and another commercial scrapyard/ shredding operation. I see lots of good stuff at each of them, but they WON'T SELL ANYTHING. It all gets shredded or buried in a landfill.

What parts are you looking for and what model? I have several sources on them, and know them pretty much inside and out.

I sold it to my neighbor was a 804,needed front spindles and driver door. The scrap tractor looked better than mine said motor was gone in it,but cab and everything was all good(was 4x4 model, was gonna put it under mine, tires 90% all the way around) before they took the claw and grabbed it by the cab,to unload it,lol. But oh well thats how it goes....

Its sad to see some of the stuff that goes. THe big yard in corinth get alot of ag stuff but wont resell anything. I saw a big lister plow like I want set up like a middle buster an a JD tool bar. No sale. they also took a nice running 9000 Ford tractor that the owner thought he would get rich off of up there. He made 400 dollars. they wouldnt sell it either just sheared it up. I was hauling alot of remnant shavings there from work and after the 2 times of them not reselling to me I took our companies business elsewhere. The other local one stopped savlaging but i do alot of work for them so I can walk the yard and trade or buy.

THe big industrial one in town thats nearest me I have free reing over it. THe manager is a good guy and likes to see the place make money one way or another. If theres an item you like you can even trade equal weight for the item. I als help take care of there wood waste they get in when they get packaged items. Ill take their wood waste to save them a dump fee. And I bring the workers gatorrade or produce in the summer and If I need some cut off or set down they stop what they do ande get it to me lol.

The reason they don't resell isn't because of greed or ill will on their part. They take in stuff and contractually can't resell. A lot of companies worry about litigation or proprietary information on a product and will only sell scrap if the scrap yard signs an agreement to destroy the product.

Of course, I know of a couple of scrap yards that don't adhere to their scrapping agreements. So if a yard sells to you it might be they are real scumbags. This is especially true of big operations where destroy only contracts are an incentive for businesses to deal with them.

Maybe off topic but I have to get my gripe out since I was teased by the title.

"You never know what you will find at the scrapyard"

Reply: Everything!!! as long as you can get there before its ran to the melter. Everything!!! and its getting too hard to buy used stuff anymore for a reasonable price because of it. "Scrappin gone wild"

I just threatened to shoot a couple ruthless scrappers that came to my place last month.

Sometimes that may be true. The yard I buy stainless stuff, I could have rebuilt a patented dupont process and that's where it came from. Still, common sense would show that unecessary waste hurts everyone and remaking stuff doubles the waste and significantly reduces resources. There needs to be a movement to make stuff available for reuse. They could do it without giving up secrets.

Sounds like you stumbled upon a good days worth of acquaintance Mercmaniac.....they are few and far between anymore. I have the opportunity to meet a lot of the pipeline guys.....I repair their tools of the trade....grinders, pipe beveling machines and whatever else they give me a crack at. For the most part...they are a good bunch of guys. Now if I could only get one of them to realize that I need lots of help in the welding arena....and I do have a keg of beer on-tap in the shop.:licking:

A contract scrapper I visit once had almost an acre of lawn mowers, in cardboard boxes, recall items. The only way they got them in was because of the scrap only contract. The manufacturer couldn't risk those products getting back out into circulation.

Imagine you manufacture backhoe buckets. You have a run that has substandard steel in them and you don't want those in circulation. Now imagine you're a TBN welder that visits the scrap yard and sees a stack of new backhoe buckets.

Are your want to buy for scrap price rights greater than the needs of the manufacturer to dispose of properly?

Absolutely not! I can agree that anyone selling substandard parts for scrap would want them guaranteed to not re-enter the marketplace. However, as a scrap dealer, if I want to do business with the general public, I think my best business practice would be to keep those substandard parts out of sight. That way, my employees aren't constantly haggled/tempted to sell and my customer base doesn't get mad at me because I won't sell to them. In business, perception IS reality. I don't want to have to say no to anyone I do business with. Good (tall) fences really do make good neighbors.:)

I agree with your concept Jim. But the reality is a scrap company can sell to the general public at 5 to 10 times the price they get from selling to the mill. That money is generally cash and off the books. Then you add in the payroll, they hire people who are willing to work hard without benefits and a lot of the time for the very cash the company gets from walk ins. The bigger the operation the less likely they will allow people to browse. There are just too many downsides to offset a small cash return and one of those negatives would be separation of materials for browsers.
