Hi guys,

I came across a YM 2210 for sale here in Ohio. The guy says he got it as part of a trade. It caught my interest for 3 things I wish I had vs. my YM1700:

1) it has a thermostart (so he says - does it work?)
2) a little more power for bushhogging
3) has powershift

I understand that I would need to go over it with a fine toothed comb, for example to make sure it's not mixed & matched parts.

Just throwing this out for discussion...

It's the macho big brother to your 1700. I would buy one if I found one reasonable.

Its not just a little more power - nearly a third more plus it can start spinning the mower before it starts moving. This means you can start off in a higher range without stalling. Then shift up as you move along. That's a lot more productive than mowing in a single gear. (And for me, I have to choose which single gear depending on the slope).

Repairing a thermostart is trivial, maybe $30 for the heater module if it needs it.

If it checks out - you'll love it.

YES! :drink:

I forgot to mention that the guy is asking $2500, which is a very good deal (with the usual caveats.) From the pics he gave, it looks like it was repainted by a dealer in the not-too-distant past. Having had a lot of experience working on my YM1700, I am a much more knowledgable buyer now.

You would appreciate the powershift and probably little more room to sit!

And like California said the pto can be spinning before the tractor is put in gear, I like that feature on mine its a time saver.

Do you guys know of a way to test the PTO without an implement? The guy doesn't have any PTO implements (I just asked him.) He lives about 2.5 hours from me, so I would rather not load up one of my mowers to haul there. Any ideas?

Unfortunately I think you're stuck hoping it is operable. However, if it spins in all the gears, and the tractor drives well, it should be good to go. The PTO drives through the regular transmission gears, as I understand things, and the Powershift is basically an in-line gearbox to the rest of the driveline.

I'm envious and hopeful for you: the 2210 is something I would really like to have. The multitude of speeds compared to a YM2000/1700, along with the extra power, additional weight, Powershift usability, and all in the same basic size as the 2000 series is very appealing to me. Especially for mowing, the Powershift is a real productivity booster with an overrunning clutch. Good luck!

This may seem like poking a rattlesnake but if you take a stick and apply some drag to the pto shaft it will stop if it is out of gear and keep spinning if it is in gear. You can also see the difference between the way it spins in gear and out of gear.

I am with 284 and Chris on that both have good points there isn't any for sure way other than load up a mower if you can. I bet its ok though but probably better to test anyways if possible.

ym2210 is a beast, buy it. good price on it.

as far as the PTO, putting some tension on it with a stick may work but will not show you how it would be under a load, take a mower, but I bought mine without checking it, I don't think the PTO is a likely point of failure on these machines.

also fyi the PTO will be spinning even if it isn't in a gear from the trans/hyd fluid flowing, that is if it has a clean system and good flow.

The PTO is drivelined to the Clutch. So to get a good Idea If the clutch is good. Take a Chain And Hook the Tractor to A tree or Heavey Object. If the Tires spin or Loose Traction your Clutch and Trans. are probly in good Shape. If the RPM's go up and the wheels stop it's slipping. May only need adjusting. So if the PTO gears engage it will work but still may slip the clutch.
