My theory on Low Ballers

/ My theory on Low Ballers #51
I look at things this way. The seller has a reason to sell. Needs money, needs the space, doesn't need it anymore. The buyer wants or needs. Now as a buyer, its my money and no one looks out for my money better than me. I look at it as my personal responsibility to make my dollars go as far as possible for my family. The truth is that when you go to buy something you know what its worth and you know what you want or can pay. If this is a one time negotiation then its all up to the seller and buyer to work out a deal. If this is a repeat customer than that is a different negotiation - this one has to be fair and equitable in the fact that both parties have to feel they got a fair deal so they can continue to do business in the future.

I buy and sell a lot. when I buy....and I take the trip to see something....you know I have the money in my pocket to make the deal. If the goods are not what they seem than I have the choice to walk away. I know have my time and fuel invested and I do assign a value to that. I am not saying I low ball, but if the ad is old, or the product needs work, or I have the equipment to haul it or the knowledge to repair or source parts...I use that to negotiate - you should too if you know how to weld or have a trailer that will haul what you are buying...not everyone does or can.. By placing an ad to sell something you open yourself to offers wether you say firm or not. And whose to say what a low ball offer is? 10% or 50% off - You have no idea when you make an offer - sure the lower the offer the more chance it may upset someone, but this is business and between strangers. My job is to get it at the best price....the sellers job is to.......maybe get the most money, or maybe get it off his property. The point is - you do not know what their motivating factor is. I have sold items at less than their value but thats because I needed them gone. That was more important to me than getting top dollar.

When I low ball and the seller says no....I have never felt that I got screwed and upset the person to the point the OP got. I do believe to open dialog and be very freindly. People like freindly conversational people and price is adjusted accordingly because of that personal connection. When someone low balls me.....I just say No...or tell them my lowest acceptable price. And if you are the first one to come for it and I am recieivng calls on the ad while we are talking - I tend not to adjust price at all.

Like Michael said in the Godfather - "Its not personal, its business" between strangers who will never see each other again. Keep an open mind while either sellingor buying and the deal gets done 95% of the time.

It doesn't cost the buyer anthing to offer a lower price. Sometimes you can get it, and if not, you're not out anything. If it was something I really wanted, I might make an offer close to the asking price if it was a deal, but if it was something that there where plenty to chose from, then I'm going to try and get it for as little as possible. Nothing personal, but the less I spend, the more I have for something else.

It's not personal. People will always try and get the lowest price they you can for something. That being said, and I am not referencing anyone here or in particular, it has been my experience that folks usually have an inflated idea of how much their own property is worth. Just take a look through the "want ad" for used cars if you want a chuckle. I learned a long time ago that, if I really want to sell something, I need to subtract about 40% from what I would like to get and advertise it for that.

I think low ballers are a good match for those asking excessively high prices for what they are selling. They can leave the fair price, fair offer crowd to conduct normal transactions.

I have a boat with an IO engine and a trailer that came with our house that I am asking $500 for. As parts its probably worth $700ish ($300 for the trailer, $100 for the IO and $300 for the motor). The boat would need a new floor, an alternator and a starter to be usable, so it probably wont go anywhere other than for parts. Have had a couple of offers for $200 or $300 from "boat shop people" looking to part it out. Did I get offended? No, I might even take them up on the offer if I get desperate, but for now, it sits waiting for me to pull the motor, outdrive, fuel tank, etc then send the boat to the dump, scrap the metal I cant sell as parts and sell the trailer.

It's not personal. ...

WRONG! For some buyers, that statement is patently false. The role of emotions in both sides of sales, particularly with automobiles, should be obvious to everyone.

Saying "it's not personal" may be nothing more than a cover used by the buyer who is driven by emotion, and gets pleasure out of screwing people. Yes, there are buyers who are motivated by "winning" the psychological game of persuading the seller to take less than a fair price. Those folks are known as "low-ballers" or "chiselers".

So, if the buyer is playing a psychological game then I agree with Cat-Driver. Don't play, send them on down the road. And yes, I get pleasure out of saying "hey parasite, you lose."

Well...I guess that is true....but I have never had someone buy something from me where their primary objective was a psychological game to somehow gain some emotional win over me. Quite honestly, if you get pleasure out of telling them to take a hike...isn't that some sort of psychological power trip? Don't get me wrong, I have turned many away.....but since I have been on both sides I don't take it personal, I just figure he is trying to make his money go as far as possible and I am trying to get the most money from what I am selling. It reminds me of the guy who passes me when I am doing the speed limit on a country road. I can get all pissed and swear at him or....I just think....maybe he is rushing home to see his kids and its a special occasion and he needs to do it that day. But what I would not do is take it personal and prevent him from passing.

I couldn't care less if you agree with me or not....................

One thing I know for sure you've missed out on a thousand other bargains..................

Because I know for every low baller out there....................

The point is .........................

See this is why I knew you were "not getting my point?"

One thing is for sure - you know nothing about me.

Have a great day.

There are professional lowballers out there. Maybe they do it for the kick or the ones that do it knowing they can turn the same item for a profit.

You certainly can characterize it that way. I prefer to characterize it as "I recognize what you are doing, don't like your conduct, and chose not to play your game." The pleasure is in recognizing the buyer's behavioral pattern as an undesirable character flaw.
