The one thing I have never understood about the private/commercial thing is just how does one provide proof that use is personal only?

Generally if you have advertising for a company on your truck they are gonna hassle you. I've heard of people getting hassled over personal race cars because they had sponsor logos so the officer claimed it was for business.

Actually, the less you use something, the more I want it inspected every year. Mechanical items have failures from sitting stagnant and rusting, corroding, etc more often than from being used and maintained. I don't know ANYONE that goes out and does maintenance on their trailer that's just sitting in their yard not being used.

I don't know what can go wrong while the trailer is just sitting there other than corroded lights. I check my lights before each use, and the tire pressures and retourque the wheels. I keep my battery charged on the car trailer. All they guy every checks when the trailer gets inspected is the lights and he will pull out the break away switch to make sure the brakes lock. I hate when they inspect my vehicles the guy likes to ride the clutch. One time he tried moving my truck with the parking brake drawn and was burning on the clutch. Most people keep the vehicles in good working order and the ones that don't still know how to get a inspection sticker.

Like slowsuki said...HAVE NO LETTERING on your truck or trailer...and if you are stopped tell them where you are going and why...just make sure that the why is NOT TO MAKE ANY MONEY...

Brakes can freeze in place, corrosion on the underside of cross-members can turn to full-out rot and weaken the frame or deck, deck boards rot out, batteries for breakaway systems go bad, suspension freezes up and doesn't provide full motion, tires dry-rot, mice and other animals nest in places and interfere with electrical wiring (think brakes, NOT lights), and the list goes on.

Go buy two riding mowers and park one in your back yard for three years while you use the other one regularly. Which one is going to start up and function properly at the end of that three years?

you never stated that you were private. sorry if i confused you. Anyways why do you you need a trailer for your tractor if its not used for work?

There are a lot of reasons... Here are a few common ones:

- Multiple pieces of property to care for
- Helping relatives or friends do work on their properties
- Transport for repair or service work at a dealership / mechanic

Around here the easiest way is to lose the Title and have a new one issued as a home built trailer.

You may not be overweight though. Take it to a scale with your heaviest item on it and weigh it out. All that matters is what is on the axles for both the trailer and the truck, that you dont exceed your trucks GCVWR, and its GVWR.

Being only 600# over by your guesstimate, you may not be when you consider the weight on the truck via the hitch. A 10,000# load should have 10% of that on the ball so about 1,000# of tongue weight which will now be on the truck.

Chris

Before you "lose" the title, though... Go find out exactly what the process is to register as home made. CT has recently changed the laws and have made it much harder to register a trailer as home made for the first time. When you go to DMV, you have to bring receipts for all of the materials and you also have to pay to have a VIN etched into the frame.

Also - if your trailer has a placard on it with the VIN, it likely also shows the GTWR and GAWR numbers from the factory. You will likely have a hard time registering for a higher GTWR if that label is still on there. And, removing it means the VIN is gone.

If it is a factory buillt, purchased trailer it can only be registered to max rating they put on the build sheet that was used to generate the title.

IDK Aboot NY but here you can register it for whatever you want.

once you register over 10000 and if your combination weight is over 26000 you will need class A CDL, also your truck will need dot #'s on it at all times when towing a 10000 GVW magnets are not allowed.

If your combined GVWR is over 26k, but only if the GVWR of the trailer is over 10k.

And magnets are allowed and can be removed when not needed.

Last time I checked magnets in NY were not allowed for DOT #, I've been fined over this so Im just trying to help.
