What to do with you tractor over the winter

Well the Mississippi wants to buy another house, and to do this, selling the tractor and equipment would release about £15,000. She's got a good point, but it took me so long to find a good tractor, and it's my work toy.

I live in the central part of the UK, so we only get one good snow downpour a year and the max it could last is only 2 weeks, so that's snow ploughing out the window. Although we did have a bad one 2 years ago.

My driveway is only around 50 yards long, so doesn't warrant a tractor to clear it.

I just wondered if any of you guys use your tractors for any other things, or take them out as a day to day work horse away from the house.

Well there you go, buy another house, then get a bigger tractor with more implements to take care of the real estate.

After visiting the beautiful English countryside, this Yankee has always dreamt about being a hedge cutter in the UK. (and I don't even have a clue what a hedge flail is!) Seems like a nice way to see the countryside. Any money in it? Are there contractor cutters who specialize (make a living/travel the country) doing this? Do the land owners do their own cutting or does the local government (council?) hire it done? Seems like those miles & miles of hedges would need an army.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I've never encountered a real life English hedge cutter before!

Well people tend to do their own really and where there's miles of hedges, it's generally owned by farmers with the equipment to do it.
My first trade is an engineer and I do the hedge cutting as a sideline. I tend to do parks for the council and large houses.

As for travelling the country, it's not that big over here ya know, you can do from one end to the over in a day.

It's becoming more evident the tractor is the least of your worries...

Ha ha, I wrote this post on my iPhone, and it corrected the text. It was supposed to say "misses"

It would be fine if your last name is "Ippi"

Nice boom flail mower. Know if these are sold on the west side of the pond? There isn't a month in the year that I don't use two or three of the tractors. Feeding the livestock of course in the winter daily with the feeder tractor. But as far as the utility tractors go, there is always brush removal, windfall tree and branch cleanup and burning (grapple work). There is fence repair and fence post replacement (FEL mounted hydraulic auger). Don't forget about drainage needs in the winter (backhoe). Snow removal. Loading anything and everything into the truck or on the trailer (FEL). Hauling firewood to the house woodpile (FEL or pulling trailer). Prepping the garden before spring...... Plenty more I can't think of now.

Engineering is my first trade too. Dang, you just crushed my dream of retiring (Engineering is my first trade too) and mowing hedges in the English countryside. That's ok, the way the economy is going here, I think the idea of retiring is just a dream too!
:D

Hi there, I live in Tyne & Wear & we do salt spreading in winter months.
Having no snow is fine, as long as temp hits 0 we're busy all night! A tractor mounted spreader would be a great tool to use.
Try small business parks - you'll be amazed at how often you'll be out & how much you can earn!

That's brilliant, I'm in the Derbyshire area in the midlands, and where I live we normally get the worst of the weather in this region.
That's a brilliant idea, but where would I apply for such work?
