I just had a bad thought, I have 1 mile of river frontage that is loaded with all sorts of game that would make finding meat easy. Problem is, the frontage is also loaded with copperheads and rattlesnakes. If I was foraging for food with my 22 and got snake bit by one of these 2 species, what is the home remedy for that cure? Ken Sweet

Well the copperhead bite will hurt like h-ll but probably not kill you ,the rattle snake bite would require cutting the skin to prevent necrosis from compartilization (severe swelling resulting in loss of circulation and ending with dead tissue and sepsis/blood infection from the bite ) it's really easy all you have to do is cut through the skin along the lines of the major muscles to relieve the pressure and increase blood flow , monitor respiratory rate and if nothing else is available asprin for pain and as anti inflammatory , you could live but the chance of infection would be huge ,it would probably be a good time to have a cold fast moving fresh water stream and your arm planted in it frequently ,good luck !

Maybe you should hunt snakes for a while - I hear they are good eating.

Forgeblast, I like those two posts of yours. Whilst I believe that striving for absolute total self-sufficiency to include today's conveniences is not worth the effort, and of course unnecessary, your approach is a means of living and continuing the human race. We both know it can be a struggle at times, but it sure beats city living - which I have never tried.

I especially like "By choosing to bring another life into this world, I am responsible for her." That has always been my philosophy too, and I frequently say that bringing up the next generation is the most important job in the world.

In some ways there is no such thing as self sifficieny, life is a struggle. For all animals life must be taken daily, we can try to prepare for every situation and can be taken off the planet by something as trivial ad a bee sting. I personally think less thought on survival and more thought on enjoying life.besides there a fine line between preparation and paranoia. And at 50 it's hard enough just to get up , much less survive extreme situations. Ever think it may not be worth the struggle?

I often ask people what their definition of intelligence is because if you understand the answer, at the deepest level, life will never be the same for you. When we talk about life being a struggle than it is our intelligence that opens the door to understanding and coping with that struggle.
Everyone in this world, every family, has a a time of sadness, hardship and struggle. The mentally ill sibling, the chronic disease, whatever. Knowing this, when things are at their best one should make the most of that point in their life because in doing so the hills that we all will eventually face will be hopefully more tolerable.

Depression, and that's what you are expressing here, grips every one of us, the determining factor between the depression we all face and true mental illness is based on time. If you are basically a happy person but are depressed for a few days, a week than you are simply exhibiting the ravages of life. If that depression lasts and keeps coming back to the point where you no longer function or function to in a greatly diminished capacity, than you need help.

My definition of intelligence is this:

The ability to constructively resolve one's problems.

If you can do Laplace Transforms in your head but you trip over your shoe laces every morning on the way out the door because you can't tie your shoes right than you are not intelligent regardless how many letters follow your name.

If you act violently towards your neighbor because he didn't return your rake you're not intelligently resolving your problems.

Intelligence is the key to survival regardless whether we are talking about a world filled with oppotunity or digging roots for grubs to eat.

If we prepare ourselves going on a boat trip on the ocean that could last several weeks/months, then we should be sufficiently prepared for our needs on a land situation. Ken Sweet

Corporations were initially established to buffer the individual from the group. We can sue a corporation we can't sue individuals in the corporation. When we give corporations the rights of individuals we loop hole the reason we established the corporation. If corporations want the rights of individuals than they must carry the responsibility of individual liability also. You can't have your cake and eat it.

Your argument doesn't hold water, you CAN sue individuals in a corporation People operating in a corporation must act with a "duty of care". If they do not act properly one can sue them individually. This is called "piercing the corporate veil".
Corporations are treated as persons for tax reasons too. The 16th amendment allowed income taxes without direct apportionment to the States. The Supreme Court ruled a corporation is a person and would have to pay income taxes. Do you really want to strip corporations from being treated as "persons". You might find you like cake both ways.

Sorry Rob, You presume to lecture us on the meaning of intelligence and yet you post the crazy notion that " we can't sue individuals in the corporation" It is shocking you believe this...I won't belabor the issue, however, you need to do some quick research and you will see you have lived all these years and have been mistaken the whole time....tsk...tsk...

I would be happy to reply to these statements but the OP has asked that we stick to the main topic.

But if you have a better definition of intelligence, which does pertain to one's ability to be self sufficient, than I'm all ears.

And I'm not "lecturing" you on anything, I'm giving my views. You have a right to disagree but you have to use logic and reason something that seems to be missing from many of your posts.

I've been "mistaken the whole time"? I hardly think so, I would say my life is quite successful in just about every aspect.
I've lived my dreams, built my own house, have several patents, am respected in my field, retired in my mid 40's and am deeply loved. You think that I've been mistaken? Do I have an eraser on my pencil? Sure, we all do.
