Hi,

I'm attempting my first DIY project with my JD 2720. It has a 540 PTO and to cut a long story short I'm trying to drive a pulley from my PTO. I have a PTO driveshaft from my tiller that I was going to use but to be honest the part I can't figure out is how to get from the female end of that driveshaft to turn the 3/4" round shaft the pulley is seated on.

I thought the logical thing would have been a male PTO shaft with a female 3/4" hole in it but can't find anything like that. THen I looked for a male PTO yoke end and still no luck. So I'm thinking I must be overlooking a pretty obvious solution.

Again, the basic idea is to have my 2720 rear pto turning a standard tiller driveshaft, and that driveshaft to turn a 3/4" driveshaft on which this pulley is seated. The whole thing would be attached to the 3 point hitch.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Caleb

Make a bushing with .750" ID & 1.000, 1.250 or 1.500" OD to fit inside the adapter.
Cross drill and pin them together with a shear bolt?:
Surplus Center
Just tossing an idea out there to get the ball rolling - someone is bound to have a better suggestion.

Another option may be to change out the yoke on one end

3/4 Yoke Usa.

3/4" is pretty small to be driven directly with the PTO shaft.

And you cant just drive a pulley with the PTO shaft. The pulley and shaft you are trying to drive have to be secured to something with bearings or what-not. Otherwise things will flop around for lack of better terms.

Do you mind sharing what you are trying to do?? What is the pulley driving?? Any pictures of what you got so far??

You could take a piece of this, Surplus Center - 1-3/8" 6T FULLY SPLINED SHAFTING, and slip it inside this, Surplus Center - 1-3/8 6T TO 3/4 BORE SNAP HITCH ADAPTER, weld it up and done.

Not cheap fix, but one way to do what yu want. Now if it was me, I would buy the shafting material, chuck it in the lathe, and bore the 3/4 hole for the smaller shaft. Broach out the keyway and drill it for a set screw. Of course, not seeing your setup, I dont think either method is going to hold on that small 3/4 shaft and it will only be a matter of time before the small shaft breaks and your pto shaft flys out and kills someone.

i've seen plenty of spline to round shaft adapters for slip cltches.. etc.. find one and bushing ID to spec..

I am going to throw this out there, full well knowing you are trying to utilize what you already have on hand, and more than likely, building it 3 pt. hitch, to simply drop and go, so bare with me....

How about using one of the belt pulley drive units that was designed to use with the 8N Fords. I'm sure some were made with the 1-3/8" female. An adapter plate should mount you solid to the tractor. Plus, give a near proper ratio to drive off of the pto. I'm not sure what mounting holes are on the 2720. I tried to find a decent close up picture doing an image search, but nothing real close.

Just thinking removing 4 studs with an air gun, may be just as quick as undoing the sway turnbuckles, unless you have a quick-tach conversion.

Right now, there is one of those units on epay, complete with pulley, for a starting bid of $25.00, with no reserve.

Just some food for thought... Take it for what it's worth...

Hi, thanks to all of you for the ideas. It got me searching down the right path and I ended up finding a part made by Hub City that is a 1 3/8" 6 spline shaft: male-to-male. So one end goes in the PTO driveshaft, the other end in the drive yoke downshaft from the pulley.

What I'm trying to make is a rope tow. We live on the prairies but on the edge of a river valley with some great hills. This is for pulling us back up after we slide down!

Before all the safety people jump on me here...I am building this with a mouse-trap style safety mechanism on the top pulley that drives the rope. As soon as someone touches the safety line going across the rope at the top, the tensioner pulley will fall out of the drive belt. The only part I haven't figured out is how to stop the folks half way up from sliding backwards! I will be trying to think of a way to brake the rope as well. Any other safety suggestions most appreciated but this plus someone on the PTO switch constantly should suffice.
