Bought my first hand gun!

/ Bought my first hand gun! #21
My wife and I went shopping for hand guns and setteled on a Sig SP2022 9mm. We went to the local range and rented 8-10 different guns and both liked the Sig the best. My wife amazed me with how fast she took to shooting the hand gun, her first time. She was drawing center mass from 7 yards on her second clip.

I have been having a bear of a time finding ammo. Walmart..etc is bare. I have found a little on the internet and got 500 rounds at the last Houston gun show for 28 cents a round. I am wanting to keep from 800 -1000 rounds in my inventory. Now I am thinking about getting a second 9mm for our condo in downtown houston so I don't have to drag the Sig back and forth.

I am also thinking I want an AR-15 type weapon for the ranch and may get one when or if the prices drop a little. Any suggestions on a brand or model rifle?
Sig is a good choice in handguns.I would look at rock river arms for AR15,s.coobie

If you are looking to do "plinking" with a riflr, and aren't dealing with varmints bigger than a coyote, a 22wmr or 17hmr will be cheaper than a centerfire, have no problems dropping critters under 100# and ammo seems to be somewhat more available, plus both are light & super-accurate with no recoil to speak of. Not a lot of semi-auto options for them though, if getting a bunch of rounds out in a hurry is what you are interested in.
The mini-14 looks like great fun, so do the AK & AR options... just a little more invested every time you squeeze the trigger.
Depends on the primary use. Personally for toting around, I'd go as light as pssible and look for stainless, so scratching it up doesn't hurt quite so bad. Have fun! Gun shopping is as addictive as tractors! :D

As far as an AR-15 pattern rifle, I've had a DPMS (a jam-o-matic) and currently have a Rock River Arms (RRA) model...the AR-15 is a great rifle and, IMHO, any gun enthusiast worth his salt should own one.
That said, I'd prefer a Ruger Mini-14 for a truck gun. My truck gun is an old SKS, BTW...

I've had a mini 14 since 2001...it is the stainless/synthetic model and it makes a great "truck" gun. I wanted an AR15, and was lucky enough to get a S&W M&P15 Sport for $675 about a year ago. It doesn't have a dust cover or forward assist, but I really don't see that as being an issue for my use... it is very accurate and I've never had a jam or FTF. I would look at that model or a PSA (Palmetto State Armory) as the best AR15 for the price.

What if there were only guns, lots of guns and everyone had say 10 or 15 or 50 guns and NO ammo?!
Seems like there would be no need to take any guns away since they would all be useless.....
Then what?......
that's the point to stockpiling and reloading! :)

Interesting, I can't remember having a jam with my DMPS.. and I know I have put thousands of rounds thru it in 3gun competition. Hey remember when you could buy an SKS for $75? now they are more like $300 to $400..If you can find one. Back in the mid 90's, that yellow box Norinco ammo for them at less than $3 per box of 20, and was usually sold by the wooden crate. Oh well.

The same is true around here. Fortunately, I don't need any ammo right now, but I'm frequently in several different Walmarts and haven't seen any .38 or 9 mm ammo in any of them for some time. Wednesday I did a little target practice at the Bass Pro indoor range in Grapevine and also found that they had no 9 mm ammo and only 6 boxes (50 rounds each) of .38 ammo. I've also never seen their handgun cases so bare.

Check out a Mosin-Nagant if you want a cheap and effective way to reach out and touch things on a large ranch.

Good buy on that SP2022, that's one heck of a good pistol, I bought one several years ago and like it so much I got one for the wife. Of course, back then, they were less than $300.
There's been a lot of good ideas for a truck gun given here, if you're looking at rimfire, the 10/22 is great, the S&W 15-22 is also great. You may look around for a used Kel-Tec SU 16 series for 223, they shoot fairly accurately, take M-16 magazines and fold up to fit under the seat.
