Want a new laptop but do I want Windows 8?

   / Want a new laptop but do I want Windows 8? #121
Sixdogs, if you do decide to go with 7 in your new laptop, I see them all the time in the Newegg e-mails they send me. If you sign up for their e-mail alerts you can get some pretty good deals. I buy a lot of music related equipment from them and have never had a problem.

My PC just died {for the second time} and I'm looking to replace it. I'm leaning toward 7, but could live with 8 as I use it more for research and write on my laptops. When one of my laptops die, {hopefully no time soon} I will go with a touchscreen with 8. I use Open Office for writing, but do need to buy Office when I decide to spend the money. What ever you get, good luck with it.

I would suggest you keep the windows 7 unit you have now. It will do all that and much more.
Microsoft is supporting windows 7 until 2020.

Yes, but my computer is losing keys, etc and starting to fall apart. Parts are coming loose and it doesn't charge right. I hate to spend more but am leaning Mac only because I can't seem to get a handle on educating myself. There are so many things to learned I'm just mentally spinning my wheels.

I bought a new laptop last Nov and while it came with 7 installed I changed to 8 in Feb. It was a right royal PITA but only because some files I installed had got corrupted. Once I found the cause of the problem and got that sorted, found how to bypass the login, and to ignore the Metro page, it's been real good. Those two problems I believe are addressed in 8.1.

My recommendation would be to chose whatever PC you like, with 8.1 installed and go for it. While you'll be learning a new OP it will be based on ones you've been using before and procedures you're familiar with and not a complete new system.

I started out on Apple Lisa and Macs but when I was seduced over to the dark side, and found the far greater range of things which could be done on a PC, I never went back.

Sounds like you have your mind set on buying new hardware. Just remember what ever you buy will be outdated in 6 months. That's the way they keep the business going.
I wasn't going to chime in on the MAC/Windows debate as it will never end. Both companies have made improvements over the years and a lot of the discussions on here were from folks that said they switched one side or the other many years ago and never looked back. Either one will do the job you want to do with no problems. Most businesses are still using older systems that works fine. They look at the subject from a financial operational perspective, rather than a nice to have, pretty looking standpoint.
In my experience, my son has been a computer guru since his college days, in the early 90's, when he used to build computers with windows operating systems for other students to make money for his expenses. After college, when he became one of the "new rich" he went through the phase of thinking he was impressing others by buying expensive German sports cars, Mac laptops with aluminum housings, etc. and always remembered to turn on the little light on the outside of the lid so he thought others would be impressed. When I told my old college roommate, hometown friend who went through engineering school with me many years ago that my son had switched to MAC, he just laughed and said, "he will be back"
At first it was all wonderful and how great his new toy was. After the shine wore off and he discovered how limited the available programs were he had to go the Virtual Windows route as most did that had a need for other programs.
Then when the Tiger and 0 X 10 systems, (I'm not sure what they called them) started being pushed as a necessity at an annual fee and were buggy the dream wore off. So in 5 years he was back deep into Windows and thinks it is a pretty good system.
As I understand it, MAC has now gone to an Intel chipset that is basically the same as used in Windows computers so there is less of a problem with having compatibility with Windows designed software operating on it. I do know there are compatibility issues with MAC software for genealogy when trying to convert it to a .ged that is compatible on Windows. Genealogy is another thing I use computers to accomplish. I have worked with MAC people on projects and had to learn a lot about their system so they could make a .ged that is somewhat compatible from MAC to Windows.
We genealogy buffs worry about whether the years of hard work and research we have expended and recorded on various digital mediums will even be compatible with any system 20 years from now. Look at how many mediums have dropped out in the past 10 years on modern hardware. It is a joy, and really makes one think, when you come across an old family Bible from the 1800's that has notes handwritten in it about the family and the old shoe boxes of pictures, cards, and letters from 100 years ago that have survived much longer than any digital medium.
Windows computers are about 1/3 the cost of a comparable MAC, so my conclusion, for myself only, is that I can keep up with the new hardware and systems if I need too, at a much more reasonable cost, not have to figure out how to overcome the MAC IPhoto system taking control of my images, and spend the leftover money on more tractor toys. As the saying goes, "the only difference between a man and a boy, is the price of his toys.":D
None of the above is meant to PO any MAC owners or demeanor their conclusions on the subject. It is just this old mans philosophy.
Everyone has their own reasons for going one way or another and most will try to justify them if you ask, as you did.
So now it is up to you. We all support you no matter which type of computer you buy.

If he's loosing keys... that's mor ethan an itch for a new toy.. that's a need to have functionality.

Just remember what ever you buy will be outdated in 6 months.

heck.. in many cases it's in pre-planned obselescence / outdated by the time it hits retail... :)

I just checked the wife's W-8 computer.
For anyone anxious that has W-8 installed, Windows 8.1 is ready for download free at the Windows Store.
I intend to wait a few days/nights to avoid the rush and see if they need to fix some bugs before I do an all-nighter trying to get over 3 Gig downloaded via satellite.

I would suggest an external disk/drive Ghost image of 8 be made before trying 8.1. in case there is a problem.
The "My Dell" thing already helped me do it on the wife's a few days ago.
Over 10 Gig with nothing new installed by me.
Geez, I remember the first pc I got right after Windows 98 came out and the merchants were pushing 95.
This was before digital cameras kicked in. I only got it to talk to my son via Pow-Wow then when he was sent to Japan for a year by his employer.
I splurged and got a single 10 Gig hard drive. Everyone thought that would be a lifetime of storage.
And then came digital photography and BLOATED software:confused2:

Just got the 23andme genetic results back recently. That turned up a whack of cousins. Apparently there are other DNA tracking services to trace relatives ?

Sixdogs if you are looking for least learning get Win7 pro and reinstall any aftermarket programs. Check with the support for those programs and see what issues if any in using them on Win7
