Want a new laptop but do I want Windows 8?

my goal is to surf the net, send email and that's about it for most of the time. I need to package photos for business and occasionally listen to Youtube music. Still, I don't want any complex learning curve. Also, I would like to assemble an album of photos and then set it to music with the two synced at certain moments. Not very complex things.

I do pretty much the same here except the music part,, I went from vista,,, to 8 with no problem,, 8 could do more for me probably but I personally don't need more,,

Good luck to you ..

Warning updating Windows 8 to 8.1.

I just tried to update from Win 8 to 8.1 but MS forces you to get a userid to Microsoft to setup the 8.1 system. These guys are morons. This is a work system and no way do I or the company want to be tied to MS to use the system. Even with a home system, having to use a userid tied to a company to use the OS is absurd. Just a quick read says that MS is requiring this userid to get updates. It looks like there was a way to work around this moronic requirement in the 8.1 beta but that is not working for me and others per the comments on the MS support site.

Oh well. When one is a pioneer you sometimes collect arrows the hard way.

I rebooted the system and the 8.1 update was uninstalled.

Windows 8 is really costing me time and productivity so I was hoping 8.1 would help. Nope. Just might have to go back to using my Win 7 images.

Later,
Dan

It doesn't force anything. Enter a non-standard (aka not a msn or hotmail addy) and a password. It will then return the option of continuing without registering a user ID.

I upgraded 2 systems to 8.1 yesterday and gave them no info

Can anyone figure an estimate on how long it will take me to download the 64 bit edition of Windows 8.1?

I know the download speed varies a lot with Hughes.net depending on the weather and others using it.

Using their own speed test meter last evening I got 2846 Kbps download speed.
I guess that is Kilobits ?
The 64 bit version of 8.1 is supposed to be 3.6 Gig.

So if the 2846 Kbps were constant, how long will it take?

Jay,
Too many zero's for me.
Using your calculator it looks like 2846 Kbps equals 0.000339...............Gig
If I'm dividing right that's 10,908 seconds or 181 minutes.
About 3.03 hours.
That might be doable during the free time between 2 AM and 7 AM on a clear night not on a weekend.

No sense of even trying if it is way out of doable range.
Hope some of the other guys chime in.
Ron

I don't know. Your new math skills might land you quite a promotion. I could see you well on your way to a high position at the Fed, or congress, or even in the administration. You might be on to something big.

Maybe the meds you are taking are a part of the aboves daily diet.

:D
