i've pulld over to a lowes to sponge off wifi in an emergency before. feeling bad.. I did go inside and find something i needed during the downlaod though.

I find Win 7 to be a very usable OS, with an i7 cpu, a 2 teraflop video card, 8 gigs of RAM and a fast hard drive, though the fans sound like a jet airliner on takeoff when I'm gaming. Data storage on an external hd and sticking with OSF software means I can use the same productivity programs on either Windows or Ubuntu. Really, Windows 7 being about as good as Linux is pretty high praise, though I had to download a lot of shell utilities to bring it up to that standard. I don't think Win 8 is going to be my OS, ever, unless I buy a tablet. I'm already using my Samsung SIII as a mobile computing platform, with a 32 gig chip, a bluetooth keyboard, the HDMI adapter and Office compatible software. I really can't see the point of a tablet.

One of the guys back a ways in this thread said that the W 8.1 install wanted his home wireless remote code to finish the install.
No one else has mentioned it, but I wonder how that would work, or be a problem, from a public WIFI connection?
It is my understanding that the download has to be "Run" rather than first saved to the hard drive for installing later.
When I first hooked up the W 8 tower for my wife it automatically found our home wireless connection and worked from there since her tower is remote in another room. When I try the download, probably Tuesday at 2 AM I was planning on direct wiring her tower to the modem since it should be a little faster that way?

not sure how that update would go. I know regular win updates go fine over public wifi.

Regular, automatic windows updates are in the background, just as in W-7 and XP if set that way. That was a problem that some folks had trying to download and install 8.1. An update for 8 was running in the background at the same time causing a error on install.
They say to force any regular updates prior to W 8.1. The 8.1 download comes from the Windows Store, not from updates.
Updates to the Metro screen APPS come from the store as well and are indicated in the Store window.

I would have my personal secretary do the update or my private pilot after he got the liquor cabinet properly stocked and my
clothes ready for the next in flight meeting.

I updated Friday on my satellite (Exede/wildblue). Started at 6AM by 6:45 it said 65%. When I got back from driving the school bus @ 8:15 it had restarted itself and was waiting for me to add the final information. Another 10 minutes or so including signing up for a Windows Acct. Pretty painless for me. The windows buttton is worthless as the functions were there already, some other stuff I've found are worthy and some I will never use. I went to win 8 last winter knowing it was coming and my XP desktop is fading. I've got it to look and mostly act like XP on steroids. I like it. I started with win 3.1 and learned over many years. Win 8 looks different, but the stuff is still there, some easier to find , some not so much.

I'm glad to hear that, Steve. I, too, started with Windows 3.1. I made a mistake by ordering a new computer with Windows 8 and 2 days later, they're building them with 8.1 but can't change an order. So as soon as it gets here, I'll be trying to update to 8.1.

You shouldn't have any problems downloading with your unlimited internet allotment.
The update from the store for the apps that were already on there were quick and simple and when I checked regular updates yesterday they were already up to date. I'll check again before the big night, which may be tonight. I never go to bed before midnight anyway, so staying up to 2AM is not a problem. Just a longer nap this afternoon.:laughing:
From what the other guys have said on here that have done it, I should be able to go to bed after I start the download, since there is nothing to do, no reboots to make, prior to the complete download. I'm normally up by 6 AM anyway. I understand there is no progress meter on the download, so nothing to stare at to see if it is moving, anyway.
I kind of like the full screen internet browsing in the "Metro" layout. I have found that the "Windows" key does a lot of navigation tricks and open multiple pages are easily controlled along the top left corner and closed with a right click.
I am so used to using the right click for things that those menus not appearing in the Metro with a right click were frustrating at first.
Just typing commands on an open space in the Metro screen does as well as typing them in the "Search Programs and files" at the bottom of the Start Menu in W-7.
I think you will like it after a few days. If not you can use desktop view and/or download "Classic Shell" and make it look exactly like W-7 with the real Start pop up menu we are all used too.
I had no intention of buying a new pc now. We were in a town about 35 miles from here that has the nearest BB to us, on other business and my wife suddenly wants to go to BB to look for a new pc tower as her old XP has been acting up.
So a few minutes later we are buying one with W-8. I had no idea that 8.1 was coming out a couple weeks later. So here we are, but we will make it work, especially if we want something great baked in the oven this week..:licking:

I have been trying to not write anything on this but cant help myself. I used Windows for years at work, and at home too because I worked at home a lot and needed access to the work network and foolproof interchange of files. Suffered through endless upgrades, fixes, semi-fixes, trying to tell the difference between a "feature" and a "bug". Two days after I retired I bought a MacBook Pro and never looked back. Don't know the details of the hardware and software and don't need to, just use it for everything day in and day out. Reminds me of a joke my old dad used to tell. If you want to know how a lawnmower works, buy a Briggs and Stratton. If you just want to cut the lawn, buy a Honda.
