Want a new laptop but do I want Windows 8?

I think for nearly all the computer does in the home environment (photos, movies, music, internet) Mac OS and hardware are superior to any PC running any OS. When you add it can't be hacked and have to run all the crap for virus the Mac is clearly the winner. I know no one who has not had to wipe a hard drive in their PC eventually. Since 1982 I have never had to do that, they just work. PC is a nightmare. The reason for the lack of hacking is not low volume interest by hackers, but the way the OS operates with the CPU and OS, it just makes it impossible. HS

Since switching to Mac 2 1/2 years ago, I have been so happy not seeing the BSOD, not crashing, freeze ups, or viruses. I do scan with Clamxav on the Occasion, and still have not had an issue. Have used my Moms W7 notebook, not a bad system, still prefer OSX. Loving Mavericks, even more that it was free!!

Ummm, you do realize that modern Macs use the same Intel chips as a Windows or Linux machine right?
As for viruses/malware, does the word Flashback ring a bell? How about MacDefender, MacSecurity, MacProtector, MacGuard or trojan.osx.boonana.a?

No. Have not heard of any of those......

But back to the original poster - Sixdogs. Have you decided which way to go after 235 post of advise?

It is not the chip they hit, it is the OS,
I agree, I was responding to HoustonScott's assertion that "Mac OS and hardware are superior to any PC running any OS"
The hardware on a modern Mac is an Intel chipset just like what you can get you a Windows or *nix machine.
IMO, you can get the same quality hardware elsewhere and the software being better can be argued. For some people, its better. For others (like my inlaws who bought an iMac and hated the OSX interface) its not (their iMac now has Windows 7 installed in Boot Camp and is quite happy as a Win 7 PC.

Windows will run smoother on the Mac platform, than on Windows.

Well, I'm getting there. I'm going to buy either a Mac or an HP mail order with Windows 7. The only concern I have with that is how long they will maintain Windows 7.

As well, someone mentioned a small Google Chrome laptop or whatever and I see that Sam's Club sells them for around $235 or so. Don't quote me on that. I think I'll get one of those for the wife as well. That's where Im at but the discussion is a good one so I'm dragging my feet.

Stick with Windows, Android is the most unstable system out there. W7 will be around for a while, W8 is a Touch screen system.

Why not Dell? They have better support than HP, and with HP you are getting a Compaq POS!!
