Now that I have made improvements to the Maine woods, we have a good bit (by Maine standards, not Ohio :laughing
of relatively black fly free openness around the house. There is one place on the driveway that has always been a little wind tunnel and drifts. Plus across the overhead doors, as usual--I think that is basic law of snow physics.I've noticed it doesn't take a lot of breeze to ground the black flies. I figure a bit more open gives the breeze a better chance of holding them down.
Tree shelter does make an amazing difference. I was walking the dog today. It was breezy and the difference between the field I opened up this summer, and being well into the woods is like night and day.
No sled.

OK, dave1949, going to let you in on little known bug control system that worked well in central Maine and only costs a few hundred dollars.
The answer is simple, buy one or two of those huge Sam's Club type fans and roll them out when you plan to sit outside, especially at dusk. Black flies, mosquitos and no-see-ems can't fly in the breeze. Spray a little OFF in the orange can on your ankles, crack open a brewski and stay bug-free in a world of insects.
Actually, we were fairly bug resistant but the summer visitors that always showed up to waste my six weeks of summer seemed particularly vulnerable because of the cologne and clean clothes they always wore. Locals knew better.

28 degrees going up to 32, the storm/snow system is bringing in warmer wet air from the South, which will happily turn into
snow in a few hours. Only two to four inches here, New England will get the brunt of this.
going to spend a quiet weekend in. Good day to work around the house, might go bring some more wood in and let the fire cheer up the day. Warm up the den anyway... Have a few presents to wrap, that's always fun to do in front of the fire.

Not good morning to put tongue on metal outside...-4F clear and calm.
If all the forecasting holds true we're going to get good taste of winter starting late afternoon into midday Sunday.

Drinking second cup of coffee. 59° with clouds this morning. Heading to 74° with cloudy skies and a NW wind. It will not stay warm long. Going to give the motorhome a bath today. Orange tree removal has been put on back burner for a while. Backhoe was taken off tractor. Will not be put back on until 3PH projects are completed.
