Tire explosion kills farmer.

Worked on aircraft in the Navy. Used to fill up their tires with portable nitrogen tanks on the flight deck. Anyway, long story short, we were trained to always position ourselves away from side walls, more in line with the treads or at a somewhat 45 degree away from them with no major body parts in the sidewall path. Most tires blow on sidewalls and the most serious injuries occur from their failure. To this day, even when airing up "lower" pressure tires, I always position myself outside the sidewall blast zone. You just never know when a failure can occur.

This is why I'd never touch one of the tire chucks that latches on to the valve stem. Bad news...

Take 2 steps to the side to grab a wrench or something, get distracted by something else.... boom!

i don't mind the latching chucks.. but i only like them as a leader on a grip valve with pressure gauge, so when you relesae the grip.. it stops airing.

and I like about a 6' lead so i can stand away

Good plan. That's the same way I use mine.

I wonder if the tire was on a loader tractor. A lot of folks run higher pressures on front tires on loaders.

I'm confused. Is it safer to add air to a tire with the weight of the loader on it or off it?

Just this last year in Clifford a man I knew was trying to air up a rear tire (for a tractor) and when he had trouble with it he sprayed ether into the tire and threw a lit match on it. The explosion will seal the rim but there's a chance the tire might not be able to take it. And, in this case the tire couldn't take it and the man died from impact injuries. He was only about 40.
While we are on the topic of tire safety and fire, this is a video worth watching and remembering. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBUVzgCHHuA

it sounded like a rear tire to me.
