Beautiful place, Dave. Glad you could get out in it.

We had a flock of Cedar Waxwings around until they ate all of the American Holly berries about 2 weeks ago.

Great pics Dave, winter is so beautiful in pictures, not so beautiful when you experience it though.;)

LOL I've experienced enough for this year. The snow has been within the normal range but the temps have been low. I think we've turned the corner on this winter; it's not over but we can expect gradual improvement from now on.

Left at around 6pm last night to go see a hockey game with my son and grandson, found it strange that it was still light out when we left. Just means that spring is just around the corner.

15F and light clouds @ 13:15 ... low tonight is supposed to be -3F ...

Tomorrow is gonna be the real kicker though ... high of 3F with an overnight low of -16F ...

Just got up a little bit ago ... went out and fired up the kerosense heater in the garage to get it warming up so I can complete tractor repairs. After that I loaded the wood furnace, which still had a nice bed of coals in it ... only 61F in the house though ...

Might have enough wood to get us through tonight ... but tomorrow night, no way. No big deal if I can get the tractor operational again. Probably gonna have to drop the big ash tree at the edge of the backyard ... it should last awhile.

Took these this morning, it was nice enough to do a little snowshoeing before breakfast.

What home looks like this time of year, just in case Drew really misses the snow.

The building on the right is the tractor garage. The north side and half of the west end is earth-bermed. 18" of fiberglass batts in the ceiling. Just sunshine for heat. It hardly ever gets down to freezing inside day or night. With today's sunshine it's 53F inside now after -1F this morning outside. On cloudy days in this cold weather it's usually around 40F-45F inside.

Rear axle seal after it got pushed out:

This little bugger - and my own stupidity - was likely the cause of the problem:

IMG_1968.jpg

It's the vent for the rear axle housing. It's up under the seat near the pressure-relief valve for the hydraulic system/3PH.

You can see the drain hole in the end:

A while back I stripped off a bunch of the plastic panels and the seat to thoroughly degrease the tractor. I found that the little rubber vent tube had deteriorated and had partially crumbled apart ... to the point that there was a vertical path into the rear axle for water to get in.

So I figured I'll just temporarily cap it with a vacuum cap - so I can wash down the tractor - until I can get the part to replace it.

Well, it took them a little longer to get the part than expected - and then once I got it, I didn't replace it immediately. Very bad move.

I think what happened was that it caused the axle to pressurize, which caused the rear axle seal to get pushed out. I'm actually surprised that it didn't just push the vacuum cap off.

And, of course, it caused any moisture in the air inside the axle to be retained ... which ain't good.

If you have a tractor that is older (ours is 10+ years) I'd suggest looking to see if you have one these somewhere up under the seat and then inspect it's condition.

Good afternoon all. 10F this morning breezy and clear. 20F forecast for the high and winds slowing down. -2F tonight then some warming up. Managed to score two pickup loads of wood for $50, so far burning ok.
Have to update a website today, finally sold my extra pickup.

Thanks. We are enjoying our time here, some days more than others. It can be difficult to keep Sharon on the reservation about this time of year. :D
