82F and cloudy @ 13:45 ... chance of a strong thunderstorm this afternoon ... woman called to tell me to go roll up the windows in her car, which I left down yesterday ... lol ...
Bup, nice on the wildlife
The barn swallows (and bluebirds) have appeared here within last month or so ... I had been wondering where they were, since it had been warm for awhile ... noticed a single one a few weeks ago and then when I went to mow saw him again and wondered why there weren't more ... by the time I finished mowing, about 6 - of his cohorts had showed up and were making bank on the insects I was stirring up.
Saw some bluebirds in the few weeks as well, in the area around the nest box ... checked it and it didn't appear that they were building a nest, which made me wonder. Checked it a couple of days ago and found a nest with a single blue egg in it.
I'll bet that fawn is cute ... although perhaps not entirely welcome if it is clippin' your wife's flowers ...
The deer that got tangled up in the fence here is completely gone except for a mat of hair on the ground. Picked totally clean ... not even a bone left.
Good luck with the stone ... (makes
me tired just reading about it

)
Drew,
I hear ya on on getting call backs and having people show up when they say the are going to ... I've called the guy from Yohe Supply (Simplicity repairs) three times over the last week - including leaving a voicemail on his cell phone - and he is yet to return my call.
I haven't even tried to split any of the real big stuff with the splitter ... it's way too heavy unseasoned. After wrestling some of the smaller pine rounds (28" or so) around on the splitter, I'm pretty sure I'll be looking to at least bust the big ones in half, even after they seasoned. Probably put a shallow rip cut in them with the saw and then hit them with the wedge and sledge. May have to pony up for a larger cylinder for log lift as well ... might be too much mechanical
disadvantage in the geometry of how it's attached. Just going from a 2" cylinder to a 2 1/2" cylinder will increase the force from about 6,000 lbs. to close to 10,000 lbs. Would be a cheap upgrade.
RNG,
Will do on the receiver pics ... probably won't get to it until later tonight ... woke up late today.
newbury,
Yeah ... all that shagbark hickory I burned last winter was enough to make me want to cry ... just looked to be really beautiful wood ... it did seem like a shame to waste it by burning it. The kitchen cabinets here are all original and pretty cheap (builder's cabinets) quality-wise. If I had the equipment (a wood shop) I'd be sorely tempted to take a stab at doing something about it. And like you say, I have plenty of other uses for lumber as well (loft and storage in the barn, etc.)
I really wish I had a sawmill ... I've spent a little time reading up and looking at them ... I kinda like Cook's offerings:
Cook's Saw Mfg. : MP-32 Portable Sawmill
... but I'd probably be tickled pink with any of them.
Don,
Good luck with your father ... he's in my thoughts.
