shop vac used for filter change

For all that recommended the vacuum in the fill hole of the L series tractors I just wanted to say thanks for the tip. Changed the filters and engine oil in my 3700SU and in dads 3800HST this past weekend and may have lost 6 ounces per tractor. The hose nozzle did fit the hole snug.

I guess your not telling that you have a catch pan to small to hold all the oil. Other wise why would you want to stop the oil from coming out when your changing the oil and filter?

This NOT the engine oil . I am referring to the UDT in the rear end of the tractor. The book states change the filter NOT oil at 200hrs I chose to do it at 150hrs (makes me feel better) Sorry if I was not clear but I intended to thank the ones who posted this for all of us L series owns. I did have a pan under the filter it is a given the filter is full and before you could easily lose a gallon with vac in place I lost 6-8 ounces at the most before the new filter was up tight. Again this is what was lost very different from no vac used . When we finished both tractors raised loaders up, dumped both buckets 3pt all the way up. This has the fluid at its lowest possible level. As I poured dad watched the site glass we guess around a quart on each tractor total loss with filter change. Did I explained better?

So the vacuum is enough suction to stop oil flowing freely, but not enough to suck into the vac?

The vacuum draws air in from whatever is removed, be it the filter or the drain plug or the pick up screen. The air travels through the oil and into the vacuum, NOT the oil! Since air is coming in, oil cannot go out. Some people talk about using rubber plugs which can be messy. If they ever tried the vacuum trick, they would not use the plug.

The vacuum trick works. I used it to replace a damaged drain plug on my cat loader, did not want to drain the 30 gals of very expensive cat oil and try to reclaim.

I have had good luck just by parking the tractor so that the filter is on the uphill side, and then plug the breather vent tube with a nail. Don't usually lose much fluid at all, sometimes just what's in the filter. But the shop vac trick is real good too.

I have done the plug the breather trick on level shopbfloor and lost maybe an ounce or two at most . not even enough to cover the bottom of the pan. If air cannot get to the top of the fluid, the fluid has a really hard time coming out of the filter hole.

I plan to try this when I am ready for my 50 hour. Whereabouts is the breather vent tube?

On the Kubota's I have owned, it is under the seat. Look for a little black rubber shepherd's crook. On my Kioti it is on the back and is the combination filler tube plug/breather.
