Thanks RNG, I have some unbranded rods that are supposed to be ok for 304 and a plentiful supply of grinding discs, it's a good technique that is in short supply. I'll keep practicing.

One consolation is that, even when my welds are still on the ugly side, stainless does give some pretty colors

Besides your welds, and the 2 pieces of stainless that appear to be about 8-10mm away from each other, what am I seeing that looks dark and rusted in between the stainless?

The brown pitted surface seen through the slot is some rusty old steel in the background. The black between the welds is another short piece of stainless 2" x 1/2", butt jointed to the bigger pieces. I hadn't wire brushed it clean when I took the picture, only pushed the slag off.

I'm practicing with butt joints first as I'm told they are the easiest joint. Also, with them I can make slots, which saves me drilling holes, as I haven't yet got a pillar drill and drilling steel with a little cordless is not much fun.

Good morning all. It is just on the soft side of freezing here, with a cruel North wind from the Arctic making it feel more like winter than spring.

For such a cool spring, I was surprised yesterday to see a lot of algae bubbling up on the big pond. That is something I have only seen in the heat of summer before.

Farmer, that quick hitch video is impressive. Not sure I would trust myself with one, I can just imagine the release cable snagging as I got to the top of the slope.

30 right now...heading to a very pleasant 63 today.

I have a couple small (5-6 inch diameter trunks) trees I want to take down. Both are on a slope alongside the trail that leads down to the field. Both also have overhanging branches that hit the 4520's cab when I go down that trail to mow.
My only hindrance to doing this is I'm supposed to wait a few more weeks before I do things like this per the pacemaker instructions. My stepdaughter is off today, so I might get her to help me...we'll see.
Only other chore is to fix the sink in my stepdaughter's bathroom. She tells me the water flow is slow...I'm guessing that might be a clogged aerator.

Good morning all. 34 here this am going to 67, so it should be a nice day. Took the Subaru in to get it serviced yesterday and to complain that it is burning oil. Less than 50,000 mi and burns a quart or two per oil change. I was told that if it burnt more than one quart in 1200 mi they would fix it but that there is nothing that they can do. The service rep told me that it is normal for the v6 Subaru Legacy to burn that much oil, his burns even more. I guess I will trade it after we get the house, don't want to do anything now before closing. Ed

35 going to 69. Another frosty morn.

Had a great hike in the Shenandoah yesterday...7.4 miles roundtrip and 1,700 feet elevation gain...packed my waders and fishing gear...lots of weight, and was able to fish from the rocks without wearing my waders so all that weight for nothing but the exercise, I guess. Beautiful day and lots of wildflowers. Met some interesting people and dogs on the trail, saw 3 bears and 4 deer. Am sore today. Here's a pic of one of the pools I was flyfishing in...caught a couple of brookies there.

Billy that fishing spot looks marvelous; hope you had it all to yourself. Did you eat your trout or is it catch and release?

42 degrees going up to 67 today, just like yesterday, just like tomorrow, then a warming period comes in with 80 degree days.

Need to see my guests off, go show my older lady friend how to mow her lawn with her new mower, than back to get cleaned up, put a suit on the first time in a long time and go out to an evening wedding tonight.

Roy, no sudden movements...you can probably do anything if you go real slow.

Ed, there have been many articles on what folks see as excessive oil consumption. What is really odd is we have gone from cars that used zero oil or basically not enough to add between oil changes, to cars that regularly consume a quart of oil or two between oil changes. Your Subaru is one model, many BMWs are having the same issue. Consumer Reports I think has a list of the cars affected; all saying this is normal. Seems not very green to consume all that oil...?
If you google new car oil consumption I'll bet you hit the motherload of blog entries about this. Just know it's not a Subaru thing.
