I have hauled a lot of lumber, up to 16'. stuck thru the back cab window. I strap it good so it cant slide. Current truck doesnt have a back window, so gotta take the trailer for long stuff now.

This wasn't necessarily wrong (yet), but look what I saw at a used equipment auction a few weeks ago ...[SmartCar w trailer]
I'm likely to get a Chevy Bolt in a year or two and will surely pull my HF 40x48", 150 lb trailer with it occasionally. Might even pull the 500 lb 4x8 trailer to bring home something bulky but light. (But not on the highway!) I'll put up a photo if this thread is still going by then. :)

We have the John Deere dealer and the Kubota dealer across from each other and every once in awhile a stray tractor will get on the wrong side of the road and be surrounded by the wrong color.

It looks like the avalanche had twelve 5/4 deck boards three 4x4s and four 2x4s. That's probably not out of weight range if the roof racks. Strapping that load down is another set of issues. Personally I'd just use my not city boy truck and load it in the bed and close the tailgate. I've hauled 16' trim in my other truck by sticking it through the back window.

It's a waste of time to mention it but I have seen boards come through the windshield during hard stops. The people forget to slow down and, oh, well. I've done it myself in the olden days and would likely do it again if need prevailed but it's worth a comment.

I lost a windshield in my '86 Olds Firenza to a wooden ladder that way [it was also sticking out of the hatch]- despite tie downs.

Did anybody catch gold rush last week? Obvious Toyota commercial built into one of the segments,
Tony Beets was hauling in some equipment and one of the trucks "didn't have enough power"
so his daughter hooked onto it with her Tundra and pulled it thru the rough spot...

I'm a tundra owner, (on #5 now) but it was a bit uncomfortable to watch that ad,
reminded me of the space shuttle tow job toyota did
