One of the simplest knots for attaching a line to a post, stob or any open ended anything...is a clove hitch...
So simple an end is not required...make a right over left loop...make another and lay the first loop over the second then both loops over the post/piling etc...wallah...

I have a pair of boots that uses the "boa laces". Amazing system for quick removal/tightening of boots with simple knobs! Other than that I have a cheat guide that came with a new coil of rope. I think knots have become a dying art with the advent of ratchet straps and such.

Been said before but in the world of sailboat racing it is said that " if you can 't tie a good knot, tie a lot of them ".

ARRRGGGHHHH! :irked: I knew that someone would 'trigger' me with that line... and I've smacked a LOT of junior Sailors upside the head for doing just that!
The proper knot for the proper job: bowline, clove hitch, reef knot, sheet bend (when required) and 'round turn & two half-hitches' are the common ones that I use. I get to teach these knots to the 'youth of today' with the local Navy Cadets, too.
Basically, all knots are a combination of a 'bend' and/or a 'half hitch'. It's not that hard.
Other than lace-tying, throwing a bowline on something that can hang, or an alpine butterfly for placing a tie-off--I find the midshipman's hitch to be the swiss army knot. Just an extra twist around a clove hitch.
Nice to be able to twist on a slide and grip knot one-handed while balancing a heavy load if you need to.
Practice knots in the dark to master them--so you can identify and manipulate them if you get stuck in it.

Used to race big yachts and the double half hitch was favoured a lot but we were always told to tie with the loose end coming from the left so if we had to untie one in the dark we would all know which way it was attached, I think in hindsight the instructor was half cut most of the time and couldn't see the knot in broad daylight but it is a valid point.

Yep, used to know more knots than I use now. Ratchet straps are so convenient. There is also a way to use knots in a rope to tie a load down where the rope acts as a pulley to tighten the rope even more.

Bowline, timber hitch, and truckers knot are about all I know..
