How To Buy A New Chevrolet Truck?

I would not mess with the Chevy or GMC site. I would go to cars.com. You can type in the info for what you want on the truck, you can search for trucks on dealers lots up to 500 miles away if you so desire. It's really easy to use and you can look at a ton of trucks, you can even email the dealer from the site. Most likely you'll be dealing with the online sales manager, which is good for you.

When we bought our Subaru Outback, I emailed 14 dealers with info on what model, color, and package we wanted. I asked for "best price" by 1800 on Thursday. 11 dealers answered me, the "best price" being almost 3k less than the highest. I think it was like 18% off MSRP. When I bought my RAM, I checked inventory of dealers, found a dealer in Eugene who actually beat those Idaho boys. Both vehicles required a train ride, dealers picked me up and I was homeward bound within a couple of hours. The power of the internet.

Unless there has been a distribution update that I haven't read, 4.10 is only axle you can get with a gas engine and the 3.73 is the only axle for the Dmax.

That is interesting,,, I could not even get the dealer to find the ratio at all,,,

At cars.com, I did find an LT for $12,000 discount,,, several of them,,,
That is better than the $6K UPCHARGE I find in Roanoke,,,

What is the weather in Michigan this time of the year??

I might be flying,,, if these local dealers can not come to their senses,,,

Last new vehicle I bought was my 2006 F150. Typically I buy my car (BMW for my wife) CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) coming off a 3 year lease. I think buying a truck new makes sense. People abuse trucks... because they are meant to be worked... and I don't want to start with that. Buying a nice car coming off a lease is a totally different story. Typically, they have low miles (because of the lease terms) and have been maintained by the leasing dealer. I guess my point is... the purchase of new/used cars are different that of new/used trucks.

CADplans: I work at Davis Chevrolet Buick GMC in Lexington, NC (about 3hrs from you). I am not in sales but I have learned a lot as to how it works.

Any GM dealership has access to GM's website called Global Connect. From there, they can punch in the specs of what you want and it will show the matched inventory of all GM dealers within the search radius. It will also show the invoice price of all those vehicles. Once a vehicle is found, the sales manager at our dealership can call the other dealership to see if they will do a "Dealer Trade" aka DT. Assuming the two strike a deal, we get drivers to swap the vehicles. We do it all the time.

Where it gets tricky is that some dealerships charge the customer for DT driver's time or what they call a "Transfer Fee". Others will charge for stuff like nitrogen in tires, "dealer prep" fees, "doc" fees, etc. Our dealership is known as one of the few that does not charge any of those fees. You can buy the same truck from any number of dealers and get different prices so shop around.

All that said, two things I will point out. First, many dealerships have a "buy or die" hounding policy where they call you over and over to pressure you into buying. Salespeople are commissioned and many believe that is the best approach. Our dealership hates that approach and image. Second, some customers want the absolute best price while others want a dealership relationship. That's totally up to you. As you know, the warranty is nationwide so if you buy on price alone, I would imagine you have some good dealerships in your area to handle any warranty issues.

You are welcome to call me at the dealership in the mornings and I can go over stuff with you and if you want, hook you up with a sales person. 336-248-5108.

Good luck in your search,
John Foy

RollingsFarms: One thing about cars.com, cargurus.com, etc. is they all show the discount promotions currently available to anyone but there are additional discounts for specific people, e.g. school teachers, students, Costco members, etc. Only the dealership will tell you about those. Still, not a bad place to start for base pricing info.

I did try that with 2 different dealers. Neither had a 4.10 axle equipped truck,,,
they are ordering them as play toys, not as useful on the farm type trucks.

Actually, neither dealer knew the 4.10 axle was available!! :confused2:

I was educating them,, and trust me, I have not looked at the trucks in a decade.

Our local dealers are REALLY sad,,, They do have a nice selection of +$70K 2500HD play toys,,,

Not sure about 2017 or 2018 models but in 2016 the 4.10 ratio was standard and if I remember the 3.73 option was available with the Duramax option.

(Oops, K7LN beat me to it.)

Truecar.com is a handy site, you can usually view the window sticker for any vehicle and see if it has your desired spec and what the market is paying.
