TODAYS SEAT TIME

Living in the mountains in the middle of nowhere is beautiful but it has it痴 hardships especially when your snow removal equipment breaks down. Frozen hands slipping off the wrench when fixing the tractor hurt but it didn't hurt as much as our Canadian junior team being put out of the Junior Hockey Tournament.

The highlights of the day was a pair of bald eagles in a tree, some great scenery and hot chilli.

I watched the video on the potato digger; very nice. Good luck on getting one that would save lots of work.

thanks. I decided to write the food bank and ask them if they had any deep pocketed donors that would like to buy one of these
for the food bank, they can own it, I don't need to, and it can be lent out to other local farms to promote more potato donations to food pantry.
They seem to go through about a ton a month, as they said I fed Beaufort County for a month last time. This year we are going to make it two, I hope. But potatoes of course will store, so others can grow them too and store them away.

It's a lot of work for the food pantry volunteers. This would make it easier on them. I'll be sitting up on the tractor...though I do get down and pick and with a potato plow, lots of misses. Definitely looks like I'd need to wait for fairly dry conditions to pick with that thing.

Living in the mountains in the middle of nowhere is beautiful

your video is marvelous, the scenery beautiful and boy did you luck out and nail it with that fan belt.
You were smiling and life was good. Kubota looked like it was doing a nice job, lot of guys here have similar rigs, and they
are out doing just that. And after a lifetime of it, I can happily now say not me.

The worst part for me is being committed to it. That's why I hired a guy to look after it for me when I skip out of town for a few days. Sometimes when it is really cold I can't wait for the black flies to start biting me again.

How long did you do it for?

I left Philadelphia five years ago, so did it for 64 years, including growing up on a farm and having to plow the driveway in an ice cold JD B so that my father could get to work. That year I left Philadelphia totaled 6 feet of snow. I said enough, mostly due to worsening arthritis.

That's a long time. You did good to stay at it that long. It must still be in your blood because you still watch snow removal videos. There is something additive about it alright.

Yup, funny you mention that...planted 200 collard seeds yesterday plus 200 Wakefield Cabbage seeds. My let's see how early I can do this and get away with it trays...most of it will get planted in a few weeks. Then goes into ground early to mid February. Seems nuts but not much winter here.
Also planted some flower seeds to get some color in the greenhouse.

400 pounds of seed potatoes on order, should get them in late February, half go in March one, half late March. Two big dig parties planned like last year.
Goal is two tons of red and white potatoes.
Lots more cabbage this year, and lots of financial cabbage spent on plastic in garden so much less weeding this year. My arms about fell off last year.

Wish the stock market hadn't tanked. Sure had my eye on this potato digger, lot of money to spend, potato plow/middlebuster works, sort of, gets clogged, there really is a better way and it's this implement. Potato Digger to Harvest Potatoes

That digger is 3100 smackers.

Instead, how about a 15'' V shovel on a 3 Pt hitch for maybe $200 and be 90% as good? It also doubles as a planter by making a shallower groove and dropping potatoes in by hand. A cheapie like this will bolt on most any cultivator shank and work very well. Not as good but save $2900 and buy more implements. :)

A+ for thinking that one through. I'm all for spending money on equip but sometimes you don't have to and it's just as much fun.
