I learned a thing or two about the M1 and I thought I knew everything!. Ha!, a Brit teach me something about firearms? That will be the day!
Well, watch the video and see if you can learn something too.

I didn't see any surprises, but I did basic training with an M1.

Thanks James,

I hardly remember those aspects of the M1 from my non-combat Army days. I only scored "Marksman" as I recall. Maybe saw more "Maggie's Drawers"@ 500 yds than anything. But I blamed that on the weapon, since I considered myself pretty good at squirrel hunting with a 22.

Correction.........I qualified as "Sharpshooter"....after looking at my old uniform.

Cheers,
Mike

I think some of the training rifles were almost smoothbores, but I had a very good one.

I've seen the video before. I think the only thing I could really take issue with is his "take" on the safety. I know on any firing line I've ever been on, if the RSO, DI, etc saw you putting your index finger inside the trigger group to take off the safety...

Well, you were in for a very, very bad day. If you're lucky he wouldn't smack you senseless with your own rifle. But you were going to get some special "me time" with your sergeant over it.

Hint for those that weren't Garand shooters, you use your THUMB to push the safety off from the side of the trigger group. Never. Never your trigger finger.

I miss my Garands. I can still identify one when I hear the clip pop out of one at the range. Still makes me smile.

Most of my training was with the M1, some with the M14. Then when I got to Vietnam they gave me one of those worthless M16s. To this day I can't bring myself to buy any of the civilian clones I see everywhere. If I were to buy any of the three for myself today it would be the M1. Kicked hard - but it hit hard and it NEVER jammed.

I own what would be called a Danish Garand. It still has a sticker inside the stock with sighting info in Danish and distances in meters. Mine has jammed some. It needs grease not just oil after cleaning. Mine isn’t exactly shot out but is well used. I also own an 03A3 that is pretty cherry and shoots much better but isn’t as fun.

I have fired an M1 that belonged to a friend of a friend. Heavy as **** (compared to a composite AR), but very accurate. Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang -PING. It was pretty fun. It was well used and when inserting the clips, if you weren't careful, the action would release and slam closed on your fingers. Was this a 'normal' issue or just from being worn?

That is normal. There is a technique to loading. Also to releasing the bolt forward if no clip is being inserted. I'm sure there's a couple dozen videos on youtube that will show it.
