RSKY, your point is noted but more people know motorcycle crashes more than elderly relatives with dimentia. I know both but it痴 true that motorcycles are perceived as dangerous, killing and injuring many younger folks. Sorry about your troubles.

The class was on presented by a dementia/Alzheimer's support group but the lady giving the talk was an expert in 'elder law'. She touched on troubles with disabled relatives but much of her talk was on what people like my wife and myself, who are in good health and mid sixties, need to do BEFORE the need arises. As I stated earlier we thought we had everything covered, and we do not. After horror stories from her and some other attendees we immediately bought plastic covers for and put copies of our parent's and our own POAs and living wills in our main vehicle. I think we have enough older members here to make an interesting discussion but my original post would have to be three pages long to start it.

I can only hope to be as brave as my neighbor years ago when he was diagnosed with brain cancer and was only given 12 months to live.

One of the very few times I ever saw a ambulance driving / rushing on our road. The neighbor chose his own time.

Here is one that will never fly. If you at fault in an accident, and someone gets hurt, you lose your license. Treat it like a dui.

I think if you cause an accident while on a cell phone weather there is injury or not they should lock you up for attempted murder.

As for elder care (a bit OT). Everyone, especially the elders, should have a POLST (Physicians Oder for Life Sustaining Treatment) posted on their refrigerator. It prevents one from winding up as a vegetable. The EMT's are supposed to pick it up with the patient. Supposed to being the hooker. I was picked up by ambulance twice, once for a Stroke (symptoms gone by the time the EMTs arrived, diagnosed as a TIA. And once for extreme pain in leg.

BOTH times I had to remind them to take that form with them. Mine also has a list of my meds and allergie attached plus a list of peopple to be notified.

I don't see why bike riders gets so upset about someone pulling out in front of them. Those rubber tires just bounce off, no harm, no foul.

I actually had someone tell me that, after pulling out in front of me. Left a funny looking black imprint and dent on their door, probably because of the big knobby tire.

My best friend spent several weeks in the hospital with his leg up in the air when an old man in a 53 Chevy turned in front of him. He had to go back some time later; they took a long SS thingy out of his already scarred leg. Another friend spent several days in the ICU when Harley met deer somewhere in Colorado. Don't know if the deer was senile, or just twitterpated.

Does Calif. have a helmet law now? ISTR back in the 60s & 70s they were one of the few states that didn't.

California has every law known to man and then some.Just this year they enacted 1000 more. Of course no one knows anything about most of them but our pols. need to pretend to be busy.

RSKY, I sure hope you did not take offense to my reply. Back in the days when I was a fireman (full time paid) in a Connecticut city I went to many motorcycle accidents that were fatal. One in particular I just stumbled upon coming back from a call. Two motorcycles, two persons each got tangled up in wire guard rails, I called dispatch and ordered 4 ambulances because the 4 persons were unconscious and had (suspected) head injuries based on observations.

Now My wife and I are late 60s and have seen our parents waste away with diseases, one was 9 years of suffering. We helped, we paid, and we mourned. We both have living wills and instructions. Our doctor has copies but when we go for various procedures, we are always asked to bring a copy of our documents. I suppose I could just make copies and have kind of a “go bag” mentality if something happens. It’s hard to say, if we go in our sleep no big deal, but a car accident or other trauma could lead to complications.

Again, that’s my story and the times have changed since I was a young fireman years ago to an old retired guy that is in reasonable health but you never know. I did tell my wife that if I’m institutionalized, find a place with 10 stories or so, and I won’t be there long.

Why single out cell phones? I see a lot of stupid things done every time that I go to the city, and many don't have anything to do with phones. I've been tapped from behind 5 times in the same city, long before most people had phones.
Too many times people complain about cell phones to distract from their own poor driving habits; when I was self employed it wasn't at all uncommon for me to be pulled over well off the road shoulder talking to a client, and still get subjected to multiple horn blowing and one finger waves.

I agree that cell phones can cause accidents BUT I was nearly hit twice by the same man this week. Once in a bank parking lot, the second time an hour later in a store parking lot. He had a dog in his arms while trying to maneuver his vehicle. Talk about stupid.
