Here in Quebec we have a corde and then the cordon.
Cordon would be loosely translated as a 'cordie' and generally accepted as being 1/3 of the real cord, or 16" long X 4 x 8.
Next comes the frauder who cuts 15" or even 14" and gets same price.
Then the price delivered but add $5.00 to stack it.

A buddy sells 'ambience' wood! That is pine, spruce balsam etc, eg anything that burns simply to look at while enjoying a glass of wine.
He gets $40. per face cord plus $10 if he delivers within 5 kms. and sells everything he can get every year.
Naturally it helps that we are in a ski resort area and most clients are seasonal renters that only recreate over week ends.
Plus they probably doze off before the fire burns out after skiing all day.

Locally the ski resort area is a valley and at night the air is a smoggy layer of wood smoke from hill to hill and the distinct aroma of wood smoke permeates the air.
Got to admit I sort of like that aroma.

When the weather is cold my dog's favorite place to sleep is right in front of the wood stove, often spending the night there rather than on his bed. He's also a favorite with the women at the vet's office so they always come out and make a big deal over him. One woman in particular has commented the last two winters running how "he smells so good, like wood smoke." I didn't realize that my stove draft was that bad.

In Wisconsin, you can't advertise firewood by facecord. It has to be cord, or fraction of cord.

https://datcp.wi.gov/Documents/Firewoodfactsheet.pdf

State of Michigan warns consumers that "A 'ric' or 'face cord' is often a stack of wood that is 8' long, 4' high, and 16" - 24" wide, depending".

There's no set unit of measure for a face cord in Michigan.

DNR - Fuelwood

Let's face it... ric, rack, rank, face cord are all non-legal terms in pretty much every state.

The percentage of people that could calculate the volume of a firewood stack are pretty slim. It’s not likely you’re going to stack it in a perfect 4x8 rectangle and cut it in even increments of 48”. You’re going to have calculate the stack in cubic inches and convert it to cubic feet and you probably don’t have the luxury of calculating a rectangle and will need to calculate the volume of a trapezoid shaped pile. Most people can’t even do very basic math like counting change or figuring the area of rectangle.

That's the sad part. It's unbelievable how many times I've given money back to a clerk, on occasion 10 or more dollars.

Just because people are to dumb to do fractions, doesn't mean the government should get involved.

People that just want some wood fire place or some occasional use in a shop, don't need a cord. So what they supposed to do, while you are saving them?

If someone needs a 1/3 of a cord around here it's free..

If you don't have 7,8,9,10 cord here you aren't going to make it through winter unless you burn fuel. A small pickup load will cost you nothing here, most people have more than they need so if someone needs a little we give it to them..

Lack of planning isn’t my problem. People contact me all the time wanting 1 rick delivered right now because they just put the last stick in the stove and only have $50.

All you have to do is say no. Free choice for them to ask, and free for you to say no.

Sure, if you know the right people, and are one of the right people, maybe it is. But not like they put ads on craigslist saying come and take of my firewood.
