For those of you still up tonight, got a great treat for ya and fresh off the press to........... My son wanted to update his shingle mill video when my daughter was out visiting yesterday, she does a lot better job videoing then I do, and my wife approves to because she's not facing the camera, my son's right hand helper. Lots of upgrades in 8 years, big diesel motor, new shingle edging saw, I haven't even been down to see it yet but my daughter got some good video of it, turn your volume up for full special effects........................

Tell the kids that a few shingles are not worth loosing a hand over,,

In the first few seconds I was shocked by the belt running off the engine with no guard,,
that was NOTHING compared to how close their hands are to those blades,,

One LITTLE slip,, and,,

My WORST ticket EVER was going 136 mph in a 55...

At the time I had a 1963 Impala SS, that I had put a 348 tri-power in it... I just had raced a Ford Torino with a 390 in it, the state trooper got both of us after being clocked with an aircraft.

Lucky for me, tickets weren't all that expensive in those days...

The whole time through that video I was just waiting for a digit to go missing! Call me chauvinistic, old fashioned, whatever ya want...but I don't think I know a single woman I'd trust to be working that quickly in that close of proximity to that blade! As fast as he was moving right next to that blade and only glancing up to grab the next piece occasionally...just asking for it IMO. And I am far from the safety police!

I'v run a shingle saw for fifty years and have all my fingers. It looks worse than it is,just keep your hands away from the saw teeth and one needs to pay attention to whats going on. I don't think there is any other way to make shingles as the mills haven't changed in a hundred years,mine was built about 1925 and looks much the same as this one it's a Chase mill was made in Orange Ma.

When you don't grow up around moving machinery...it looks like everything is going to kill or maim you!

But many of us grew up learning to pay attention to our jobs and get along just fine without the "safety Sallies" following us around!
