Interesting, I would never build with the joists outboard of the posts! All my joists get hangars , rafters get hurricane ties (need em here). All my exterior nail gun nails are galvanized AND clipped headed, they work just perfect. Your code does seem a bit ridiculous!! Glad I don't live in NY I guess, but with your gun laws that wouldn't be an option anyway!:D

I used to reside (didn't consider it living) in colorado the county I was in had some ridiculous codes also, most were aimed at squeezing money out of people though.

Funny enough, we also have to have H3 hurricane clips on all rafters here. Our gun laws aren't that bad despite our Governor's hard efforts. His "safe act" that he signed at 1 in the morning thinking no one would notice, was repealed because of many many flaws. One being it made all police service pistols illegal! Not well thought out at all. I have no issue doing full background checks, our pistol permit process is a p.i.t.a. but I'd rather keep pistols out of the hands of those who shouldn't have them. Our county requires you meet in person with a judge when applying, it wasn't that bad, took 5 minutes. The biggest pain up here is all nearby states require separate permits, my NY permit is not good in any other state and all aren't good here. So if I wanted to carry out of state to go to somewhere like say.. South Carolina, I'd need like 5 state permits 'til I got South of the Mason Dixon line, then permits seem to be accepted in more states.

HAHA!! That's funny... I'm looking forward to seeing how I do the roof too!!

So if you look at this picture, the left side posts,4 of them, side closer to the ground, will sport a deer blind on top.. at least thats the plan.. So I'll have a roof on that and planning to have a lower roof on the other end to try to control afternoon sun.

If at all possible I would consider leaving some open space above the main shooting bench etc...just so the noise is not so bad...even with "ears" on it can still be bothersome the more enclosed it is...

To buy? Or to carry?

It's a pain to get the permit, it been a while so I don't remember exact costs, but these are in the neighborhood. I had to do fingerprints @ $125+, permit fee of $30, NRA safety course, $30, wait for judge to have an opening, $10 to print permit, wait for permits to come in mail. Oh did I mention they wanted you buy a pistol after you get approved, but before they print the license? But here's the best part, you can't even hold a pistol at a store until you have a permit!! So how do you know if it even fits your hand etc??? So dumb. Once you get the permit, carrying is easy, just keep it concealed unless pistol hunting, then it can/should be exposed while on hunting grounds, concealed when leaving. Now to buy one, you go pay for it at a store, get a voucher, leave without it, get it added to your permit, wait for the new permit in the mail, then go pick up your pistol.

Or maybe get something soft under the roof so the sound doesn't bounce off as much. Insulation, old carpet/rug, bags of sawdust from your Mill, anything to absorb some noise?
