Grinding and flying Sparks

I don't think anyone I know that owns grinders for a living has any guards on them. And come to think of it, they never wear any eye protection. But doing that for fifty years! Lucky or just doing things safely a certain way?

I have done very little grinding work where you don't have to repositon the grinder three or four times and a sheild DOES get in the way.

Yes, moving the guard is necessary but not using it isn't smart IMO. Most of mine are moveable without having to reach for a tool.

Do agree that handling and positioning it such that if it fails to minimize risk of injury is smart.

I just bought a second 6' x 8' HFT f-glass welding blanket. ~$35 US and IMO a good product.

Grommets allow hanging, but I usually just lay one over the nearest items at risk when forced into the garage or barn by wind.

I hve one too, bought on sale. Only used it once I think, but a good thing to have on hand. Nice and heavy too, so it doesn't blow away.

I got mine at Princess AUTO so probably the same as what HF has to offer. I thought 6X8 was about right, but maybe mine isn't quite that big. I'm not sure I ever used the thing all spread out yet.

Always meant to get a screen, but just don't have the room in my shop for yet another thing.

I decided on a 6x8 screen from northern tool. I hope it is well constructed because I thought the price was a little high. That is why I just ordered one instead of two. I may order a second one if it looks to be better than some China junk, I'll let you know after I use it. It's delivery date is sometime between Friday and Monday.

Ind toys....I like your spark screen video, I don't think I could afford one of them. It's odd that sparks can pit glass but has little effect on skin.

Like I said before. I can't believe the number of people I have seen that direct grinder debris at good stuff. Not so much the sparks but metal in there. It will rust and eat into paint. That's OK I guess. It's unfortunatley often customers stuff.

Not only that. I don't think they have made paint that can match the durability of that "shop dust". What is it? Paint overspray, grinding dust and just dirt??? Maybe worse if you have a hot and then cold shop in a changing climate with varying dew point. I cover a lot of stuff with old bed sheets. Looks like helll, probably an extra fire hazzard, but I don't like that shop coating on my stuff.

I have 2 of the harbor freight fiberglass blankets. One for the welder and one for my smoker. Works great at maintaining temps in the smoker in the winter time.

:thumbsup: Doesn't take much, does it? I also put a piece of wood under my 14" 'chop saw'. Avoiding rust stains from cutting a lot in one spot taught me that 'combustibles' usually don't catch fire easily from grinding sparks if you just keep an eye on 'em.
