Ceiling Fans Blowing Up or Down In Room With Wood Stove?

The problem with a log lift as I see it, is that let's say I mount it on the right side. Now I have to get all my wood on the right side of the splitter all the time. And if a large piece would fall off the left side, I'd have to figure out how to get it to the right side again.

I suppose I could build a table. But my splitter pushes the log through the wedge. So the splits end up past the wedge when they fall apart. So on a large round, there's a piece on each side of the wedge after the first split. I then have to decide which one to slide back to the beam and either slide the other one to the side or let the next split push it out of the way, then figure out how to get it back to the beam again.

I figure with tongs, I can let the two halves fall, grab either one with the tongs, lift it back on the beam and repeat.

Money bet says I'll do neither and just pay the gas bill this winter. 🤣
🤣

Baby that back!

All the best, Peter

Sorry about your back.
Thanks but don't be. I couldn't walk more than 100' without grabbing a wall. And I could only walk completely hunched over. I couldn't lift anything. Etc.

Now I can walk upright for miles and miles. I don't wake up in the middle of the night screaming in pain. I can lift moderate weight and only have occasional discomfort, but not really pain. I just have to be careful HOW I lift things, and find smarter ways to break things down into lighter loads.

I'm 100% satisfied with the outcome of the surgery. Very fortunate. (y)

That sound like a good little system. I am not judging you, I am genuinely curious. Why do people put wood stoves in the basement? There must be some good reasons, because plenty of people do it. Space, cleanliness, heat rises, etc. For us, our wood stove is as much aesthetic as it is for heating. But living in SE TN we can have that luxury. For you yankees I know wood stoves can be all about business.
I have a pellet stove in the basement. When it’s really cold, I use the stove to heat the floors. And when I leave the basement door open, I can feel the warm air rising through the ground floor of the house.

Now that I've had back surgery, I won't be splitting the same as I used to. I had some rounds that were 3' in diameter. I'd build a ramp out of split wood and roll them up onto the splitter by hand, then halve them. Then quarter, etc... I'll never be doing that again.

I don't even bother with rounds that size - even with the log lift on my splitter. It's just not worth the hassle. We've got plenty of prime smaller diameter hardwoods to choose from.

Yes, that's a lesson learned and how I will proceed in the future. However, once in a while, someone gives me a tree that I just can't resist. 🤣

Treehugger?

I use my PT for anything not an easy lift. We only get one back per lifetime.

All the best, Peter

I honestly think the situation can be different for lots of scenarios. I am looking for what you do and why, also, I'd like to get your opinion on my scenario. Here is my situation. The room our wood stove is going to go in is 12x25 with a vaulted ceiling about 12' at the peak. The wood stove will be almost centered on that tall wall. To the left of the stove about 10 feet is our kitchen that is an open wall with a cabinet and counter in about 2/3rds of it. There is a ceiling fan on both sides of the room with the woodstove almost centered between them but a couple feet closer the left side. My goal is to get as much of that heat to rest of the house, past the kitchen as possible. So the heat will convect up above the stove, part of my thinking is if I put the fans on a low blow it will set up a nice convection current, creating some good mixing. My other thought is if I put them blowing up then that air would move along the ceiing, hit the wall and follow it down where it would hit the counter and bounce towards the kitchen. Does it matter? Am i just going to have to experiment when I get it in and see which works best?

I make it a point to cut down a tree almost every Earth Day. My kids cringe! 🤣 Then I remind them of the 20,000 we have on our tree farm and they're OK with it.
