Mr. Ovrszd, honestly, earlier this week I was thinking of you as I hadn't read any posts from you in a long while!

Good to see you back...
Thank you. I'll do my best to clutter up this place more often. :)

Well I too am happy to see Richard back!

I picked up a couple of small Made in England Record vises the other day

A No 0 and a No 1 with pinned brass jaw inserts

I'm in the process of making an elevated receiver mounting for the No 1

Mock up. Subject to change ..... lol

Somebody is burning very tidy square holes in rather thick steel. I won't try this at home.

Welcome back ovrszd!

Today’s $60usd purchase:

Two vintage Craftsman drill press vises

One extremely nice albeit small homemade machinist vise

One mini (my terminology) Palmgren angle vise

One unknown make but heavy duty with smooooth acme thread drill press vise most likely made in Japan or Taiwan

All units in good shape and NO errant drilled holes or other abuse

The big one immediately made itself at home…

Update. New mock-up. I decided if the small vise was going to be elevated it may as well have its own little table for keeping stuff off the welding table…

I rarely have a need for brass jaws. With that said, couldn't I make a pair, drill my vise, and pin them on when needed?

What I've done in the past was just used 2 pieces of brass angle cut to the length of the vise set over the top of the jaws. I didn't need the brass often, and it didn't bother me that the brass was loose on the vise when I did need it. Once you clamp, the brass stays in place anyway. That's just a quick and dirty (lazy...) way to do it.

Gotta love the jaws on that big one. (& spot-weld cutter-outer in spindle) I have a tilt vise on the 'big' mill, (8"x28") fine for alum & nylon or small parts & has a lot of spindle/table clearance that Taiwan & China don't build-in.

btw, I have a Palmgren rotab with X & Y travel & Sears-Palmgren box that's way too tall o'all for me to use and needs to go, say $150 and local pickup. I'd rather program angles/patterns/plots/shapes into the mini's DROs and two hand-wheels to locate is plenty for me. :coffee:
