3-Point Hitch PTO Generator arrived today

The Iseki manual for the GC1720 does list a "Governor, all speed." I hope I haven't been coming across as argumentative, it's just that I initially do not accept any info that comes from the internet, and...you guys are, after all, the internet.:) I have noticed that the rpm's will drift down...

3-Point Hitch PTO Generator arrived today

The plot thickens again. I talked to the MF dealer in Fallon, NV where I got my GC1720 and their reply was no governor. I tried to find a national Agco/MF technical support contact but they seem to want you to direct technical questions to your dealer. Maybe I need to conduct a poll and...

Hydro oil level issue on MF GC1725MB

The dye might be a good idea. I use Lubrication Engineers Power Fluid 7500 which has a reddish color to it that makes it real easy to see in the sight glass. I have a motorcycle with a sight glass and I once overfilled it due to not being able to tell when the sight glass was empty or full...

3-Point Hitch PTO Generator arrived today

CalG, Thanks for taking the time to post these diagrams. I also called Vahrenburg (sp?) MF dealer in Missouri and they confirmed that with a GC1720, there is a governor that will maintain the engine RPM within reasonable limit as the generator load changes.

3-Point Hitch PTO Generator arrived today

There is a difference between a Diesel engine designed to power a generator and a Diesel in a subcompact tractor. I’m hoping someone can provide an explanation about a governor in a small tractor.

3-Point Hitch PTO Generator arrived today

The thread starter here has a 25 or so HP subcompact tractor. I also have one and I'm not convinced there is a governor. The throttle lever controls the fuel feed in the injector pump but I don't see any sort of feedback device. I think any significant load increase is going to drop the...

3-Point Hitch PTO Generator arrived today

I know this is an older thread. Just wondering how a GC series tractor maintains the right RPM to keep a PTO generator at 60Hz when running unattended for hours at a time? I could be wrong but I think the speed control lever is just held in place by friction and there is no actual governor...

    Massey GC 2300 engine issues

Those engines are pretty much bullet proof so I don’t think there are many forum members with engine repair experience. If it were my tractor I would spend the money and go with the OEM gasket. Aftermarket parts in general can be great or not so great, there is some risk involved.

    GC2400 steering cylinder seal leaks

I haven’t worked on a MF steering cylinder but my experience with other cylinders is that the caps are ridiculously hard to loosen. Just my bias against dealers but if you have a local hydraulic shop you might be better off taking it there. I’m picturing a dealer “tech” messing with the caps...

Have you ever thought about changing the central air conditioner?

A heat pump sales guy tried to sell me on a heat pump replacement for central heating. It was not a mini split, it was a central heat pump unit. Didn't do it though, mainly because the duct work in this old place is not very efficient and would need reworking to make the heat pump worthwhile.

    Hydro oil change

I woudn't over think this. Seems like it is common sense to continue changing the hydro fluid ever 300 miles as long as you own the tractor. You might call your dealer's service department and ask them why the manual stops requiring maintenance after 800 hours.

    Bronze Brazing Nuts to Plaque

I install a lot of similar bronze historical plaques. The foundry man casts raised bosses at each corner. All we have to do is drill and tap them. This is a lot simpler than brazing 4 nuts and you might ask your artist about it. Of course, it will complicate the casting work.

Thanks Dave, I will never have a use for it but as a matter of principle I don’t like to destroy parts unless absolutely necessary.

GC1700 Hydrostatic Drive Cooling Fan Replacement

Dave and WranglerX, thank you for your input, it's been very helpful. The new fan and hub are ordered and should be here tomorrow but I won't be working on it until Monday - I will post how it turns out!

GC1700 Hydrostatic Drive Cooling Fan Replacement

I’ve been clearing brush and in spite of a home made skid plate something got past it and took out the cooling fan. I was dismayed when I tried to remove the old fan. The fan binds in the narrow gap between the floor pan and a cross shaft for the midmount mower control. I will never have a...

Running My Manual Feed BearCat 554 Chipper

I have a used Bearcat 554 that I run with a Massey Ferguson GC1720 (19 PTO HP not including an altitude derate at 6,000 feet). I was concerned about the starting load but the little 3 cylinder motor handles it. I really like the shredder feature, chips come out very small for fast composting...

What have you done with/to your GC Series 2300, 2400, 1700 Tractor TODAY

We’ve been incredibly lucky, no large fires in our immediate area. Yet. I have a Pirhana toothbar and it’s pretty effective for clearing.

Clearing brush to create more defensible space against fires. My GC1720 handles the Bearcat 554 chipper/ shredder just fine.

    Steering wheel knob placement

When we were kids we called those steering wheel knobs “Brodie Knobs” because they were used for going into a sideways sliding stop on dirt roads, called a Brodie. Not sure where the rerm came from.

You guys getting the snow are fortunate. We got hammered pretty good in December but not a single millimeter of precipitation in January. First time that’s happened since they’ve been keeping records. Nothing predicted for February and they are talking drought. As for what I did with my GC...

What have you done with/to your GC Series 2300, 2400, 1700 Tractor TODAY

Not in Reno itself. We are in an unincorporated area outside of town at close to 6,000 feet, the elevation is why we have so much snow. But every winter is different and has a life of its own.

What have you done with/to your GC Series 2300, 2400, 1700 Tractor TODAY

Deja Vu all over again, a week later. Not new snow, we had a windstorm that redistributed last week’s snow. Heat wave now, in the 40F range and it’s melting fast.

What have you done with/to your GC Series 2300, 2400, 1700 Tractor TODAY

Doing some serious snowblowing with a 63” blower on my GC1720. Works perfectly and plenty of power even at 6,000 feet elevation. Real happy with the blower and the GC1720.

What Have You Done That Has >"TOTALLY CHANGED"< Your Home?

Best change ever! All we did was get rid of an old woodstove and replace it with a modern high efficiency stove. Made a surprising difference, not to mention it looks better and has a much nicer glass door.

    RTV ROPS - beware

Sorry about the rollover. Are you going to repair it? Did they call that frame ROP? Seems like sometimes they make a point of calling them names like light bar.

Splitters and Wood, show your pics!

Yeah, it looks like they patterned the basic design after a hydraulic press. Hard to believe high school kids designed and built this thing without supervision or help. They are both friends of mine and one of them thinks like an engineer. He’s an industrial electrician and probably makes...

Splitters and Wood, show your pics!

The original builders sharpened the wedge like the leading edge of an F-104. It slices right through knots and I have to be careful not to cut my fingers on it. Not sure what kind of steel or heat treat is on it but it stays sharp.

Splitters and Wood, show your pics!

Here is my splitter. Built by a couple of friends when they were in high school 40+ years ago. Amazing piece of engineering for high school kids and it still works fine. The Wisconsin twin was surplus from the Alaskan pipeline project. I think they stole the hydraulic cylinder. The ram...

    GC1720 Steering problem

Not that I don't trust dealers...but I don't trust dealers. I don't have my GC1720 in front of me but changing that steering cylinder is easy. Unless I'm missing something, you remove the two cheesy mounting plates on each side, disconnect the rod end fitting, disconnect the two hoses and...

    GC Engine Oil Question

I work the heck out of my GC1720, maxed out snowblowing and heavy loader and digging work. I’ve been using Lubrication Engineers 10W30 Ultra oil. It runs about $25 per gallon which I consider reasonable. Sure Walmart oil may work just as good, who knows, but I’m happy with what I’m using.

    MF 1720

I think the equivalent Kubota was at least $4,000 more than my GC1720. The price, plus I like red, helped with the decision. No regrets or issues here either. It is a real workhorse.

Loose and Rattling Steering Cylinder and Tie-Rods

Yesterday I hooked up the snowblower on my GC1720 and while putting the tire chains on I noticed that the steering cylinder was loose and rattling around in its brackets and the inner tie rod joints had about an eighth of an inch in and out play in them. A search shows that I'm not the first GC...

Skid plate for GC series tractors

Sorry for the delay. It's pretty simple and I remove it in the winter to hook up the front driveshaft for a snowblower. Have to also remove it for changing the filter but it's only 4 bolts. I made it out of a scrap of steel of unknown parentage that I had laying around. Lots of big rocks...

Another No Start and Easy Fix

Got up at 0400 yesterday to run the GC1720 with snowblower up and down the road. Everything worked fine, went into town, came back and it was still snowing so I decided to make a other pass on the road. Starter would not crank. Turns out the PTO neutral safety switch was iced up and stuck in...

    New grapple for new gc1705?

Here is a simple option from The Thumb - Add-on Grapple Attachments. It has been useful and I leave it on most all the time, just raise it when I just need the bucket. Kind of an apples to oranges comparison to a dedicated grapple but I have been happy with mine.

Here are a couple of Blue on Red pictures. The blower is a New Holland CS63. It took a little bit of fabricating to the mount bracket working right.
