I've never replaced a hydraulic hose on my 1972 IH354 (it has a loader) but I've replaced two hoses on the backhoe that came with my 2006 John Deere 5205. Both tractors are parked in a shed out of the sun.

Hello Roadworthy, Thank you for taking the time to reply with your good suggestion. With the small resistances involved dirty contact surfaces sure could get the gauge to read Empty. Unfortunately, after blasting the four pins with contact cleaner and working them in and out, still no joy.

While bush-hogging I managed to disconnect the electrical connector at the bottom of the fuel tank for the fuel gauge sending unit of my 5205 tractor but after reconnecting it the gauge still doesn't work. So there was a change in top links between 2004 and 2006 - mine certainly has no roll pins. Although on mine there are bosses on the main casting where there are holes in yours, mine isn't drilled through to allow installation of the pins. I like your attitude of repairing something if possible...

I tried unscrewing the ends of the top link that came with my 5205 when I bought it new in 2006 and the ends unscrewed easily. I think your link took a heck of a bang at some point and ruined some of the threads. Are those rubber plugs perhaps filling in threaded holes for grease fittings?

Is the radiator hot after 20 minutes of run time? If it is not, then I would suspect a water pump problem.

For how long are you running the motor? On my 5205 the temperature gauge needle goes up almost into the "red zone" when the motor is warming up but then drops back down a bit once operating temperature is reached, presumably when the thermostat opens.

If what you are buying was produced in North America there should be no duties applied to it when crossing the border.

The original poster doesn't indicate his location but one has to be careful with the model numbers of these IH tractors. A U.S. market 354 is the same as a 444 in Canada and the rest of the world. A Canadian market 444 is a smaller tractor than the American 444.

It is a fiddly job because the thermostat housing is mounted on the motor vertically. It has been a couple of years since I had the housing off to clean the cooling system but I think I used some gasket glue on the gasket to hold the thermostat in place while reattaching the housing.

If you only have a few logs to do on a flat surface, can't you just chain one end of the log to the bucket and back the tractor out?

My Woods brand bush hog is about 45 years old and I use it roughly 20 - 30 hours per year. In 1990 or so I took the blades off and sharpened them. I didn't notice much difference to the cut so haven't touched them since then. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

On mine a 1/8" drill bit fits into the gap (or free play) easily. On the rod end a 3/32" drill bit fits in the gap. I don't know how many hours are on it - perhaps a couple of hundred but the backhoe has been working well since I bought it new in 2006.

When I measured again for the photos I found that the width of the dipper is more like 7 1/4" at the level of the pin. Higher up it is more like 7 1/16".

On my 48 Backhoe the overall length of the pin looks to be 7 3/8" while the width of the dipper measures 7 1/16". If you want photos let me know.
