Before and after pictures of grading my private road at the cottage

So today I used the box grader to finally "fix the road". I'm very pleased with the result [emoji846] To make it look like that, I finish by pulling an old mattress frame behind our ATV to level everything out.

I'm going to have the company that put the tubes in two years ago to come back next spring and take out the tires so I can have a look at the damage inside. I'll go from there. Thanks.

Here's what the worst (from the outside ) of both wheels look like. Not knowing how bad the shape was, I was worried about a catastrophic failure/explosion so I used my thick welding gloves and protective glasses as well as grinded from the side of the wheels, just in case. For now, being...

question on going from conventional oil to synthetic on smaller engines

My 1991 B&S land mower has only seen W30 conventional oil and still starts on the first pull. Had to change the carburetor film and primer bulb, but that's it. Oil is changed yearly in the spring before its first seasonal use. I do start it for about 5 minutes to warm up the oil before the oil...

I have a bad feeling about this

Ok, reviving this old thread to give an update. Two years ago, I had my wheels emptied and tube installed. Little did I know it was just a timed bomb. My rims are no longer leaking but this what they look like last week :( How screwed am I? Will these last at least the winter? Hoping that...

question on going from conventional oil to synthetic on smaller engines

My B&S mower is 31 years old and beside changing the carb film twice and push primer bulb once, has always started on first pull. I put 30 grade conventional oil from whatever I can get my hands on in the spring. In my 27 years old Tecumseh snow blower, same but 5W30 conventional oil. It...

    Chipper clogged by pine needles

Thing is, last winter, the ice storm we had mainly broke branches off pine trees, so that's about all I had to chip. Cleaning the chute with diesel to remove the gum helped alot. Chipper clogged by pine needles

Thanks all. To answer some of the questions: The chipper has just a few hours of use, no hard wood (lots of sandy soil here so mostly spruce, pine and some birch. I checked the 4 blades and they were all sharp. The freezing rain only did damage to the pine trees, so that's all I had to chip...

    Chipper clogged by pine needles

So because of that big freezing rain event last winter, we lost many pine's branches that I had to chip this weekend. The first hour went fine, then the chute clogged with pine needles, like real hard packed, bogging the tractor. After unclogging the chute, I went at it again but that only...

Need help fixing a stupid mistake I made two weeks ago

Oh believe it, it's not something I intend to repeat! But you know what they say experience is, right? It's the ability to recognize a mistake when you make it a second (third, fourth) time lol. You mean the red container for gasoline and not the red diesel, right? I guess a draining was...

Need help fixing a stupid mistake I made two weeks ago

Ok, I added this small heater to the side of the tank and I've let it run for about 5 hours. That did the trick :-) Diesel flowing was warm to the touch so I guess 5 hours was an overkill lol. This is how I drained the diesel from the tank. At first, it was just water, then diesel started...

    2nd shear bolt broken

And from what I read, if you tighten them too much, the friction between the plates will be too much and you'll end up with damage instead of a broken shear bolt. There is a reason it's a locknut and not a lock washer.
  43. S

    2nd shear bolt broken

Gave them a call. They confirmed that it's an 8.8, so that 6.8 is a misprint. Now all I have to go get are grade 2 1“ 1/4"D shear bolts and locknuts for the auger.

I guess I'll have to call tomorrow. They are in Ontario and it's a Family day holiday there. But found this further down the manual, so twice there they mention grade 8.8 for the PTO shear bolt. Don't know why the original was a grade 6.8...

I have no clue. It was already installed when I bought it. Now that I know there is a direction, I'll see if I can see a marking. Although if it's oriented wrongly, nothing will be done until spring. No way I'm working with cooling fluid in these temperatures we're having lately!

Starting a tractor in extreme cold temperatures

Yes, this is the type of heater I think the tractor has. I don't think it recirculates the cooling fluid. I hear no sound from it. Regarding the fuel, I use winter diesel. I can see grey smoke coming off the muffler so I think it does make its way to the combustion chamber. I'll also check the...

Thanks. I'll look for a block heater. That one came with the tractor when I bought it last year. Regarding the oil, the owner manual doesn't mention anything below 10 grade. Yeah, mid fall, I used my box grader to re-level my 1000 feet private road and then removed stones that would have otherwise be ingested by the blower. So far, in two years, the only time I've sheared a bolt was because of a dumb mistake. Hopefully it will keep that way but I'm not counting on...

Well, my actuator is dead. I'll need to get another one. Hopefully it's a fluke and the new one won't have that issue. I'll make sure to install it with its rod pointing down this time. I opened it and just the motor itself has trouble spinning. I don't see any water infiltration but had it...

You have way more snow than here (South West Québec). Can't wait to get a real storm so I can go cross country skiing without fear of damaging my skis.

Added an electrical actuator to my snow blower chute deflector.

Didn't have enough snow to use the snowblower so far. It either melted before I could blow it or not enough so I used the ATV/plow. Same here in South Western Québec. Have about 1" of snow on my private road when I got to the cottage on the 28th. Too little for the tractor/snowblower so I used the ATV/plow. 87. S

Added an electrical actuator to my snow blower chute deflector.

Well, turns out that actuator is not as water resistant as it was said to be, even pointing upside down  It wouldn't move until I thaw it inside. Snowblowing rules of thumb

I have a 300 meters private road. Takes about 15 minutes to blow it. One pass going out, one pass coming back in. Done. Now with my electric actuator to move the chute up/down, no need to get out of the tractor. It's gonna be even easier than last year [emoji846]

Should I fill the hydraukic oil tank on a new chipper before storing it for the winter?

So, luckily, my local Home Hardware store received a batch a 5 gallons AW32 (Wakefield) hydraulic oil so I went and buy one during my lunch hour. Good idea. The actuator is IP54 which should protect it from rain but adding another layer of protection doesn't hurt.

Added an electrical actuator to my snow blower chute deflector.

Not much but I added this electric actuator I got from Amazon to adjust the chute's deflector. No more leaving the tractor to adjust it :) Used a scrap piece of metal (1/8" thick) to extend the actuator so it reaches the holes of the original deflector's adjustment rod. Switch to control the...

Would a check valve work and if so, where should I put it?

First time using my new valve since I installed it. It fixed the problems I had with that log splitter valve, which were, 1. backfeeding the valve's vent port when raising the 3PH, moving (ie, pushing) the valve's handle. Now the handles (I now have a two spools valve) stay put whenever I move...

So far only the SR+ comes with LFP. Not sure if the SR+ will be the trim of choice though. If you look at the millage rented cars have after just six months, they are obviously not rented to go get the groceries, hence why LR would make more sense in my opinion.

I wonder what will renting EVs do to the batteries. My thinking is renters don't keep their cars for very long and to increase range, they might to always charge them to 100%, which unless they are LFP, is bad for the battery longevity. They will probably replace the vehicle before it becomes an...
