Brown spots in grass after I mow.

Yup, as others have said it’s likely heat burns from where you stopped the mower for an extended period of time. My neighbor and I figured that out when we noticed his Cub Cadet ZTR left brown spots in his lawn just as you describe. In his case it was two spots right next to each other which...

Electric Chainsaws and Working out of a Bucket

This is my issue with a lot of the cordless saws as well, they are very heavy compared to their output, especially considering they are all like 95% plastic too. My little Echo top handle has saw is like 5 pounds. 😂

My 2511 is piped and has the 1/4 pitch picco bar and chain conversion and it’s a little ripper. I use it like a big saw because it’s so fun and quick to use. Echo killed it with that saw.

What did you buy this week?

Yeah I think you should do some more research, 2022-2024 are all having major bottom end failures. Also Toyota is leaving people out to dry if the failure happens after the warranty is up. There is a reason some dealerships will not take these in on trade and also why the second gen is selling...

    20 inch chainsaw recommendation

That’s how the easy start works, pulling the cord is literally just winding up a clock spring that spins the engine over when you get to the end of the pull. If you just yank on it like a normal pull start it won’t work and will damage the starter. It’s not a great system on a saw though IMO...

    Husqvarna 555 chainsaw

Most dealers make more money on service than they do on selling new stuff. Sounds like this dealer was telling him the right thing, some things aren’t worth fixing if you’re paying someone to do it. To do a full tear down and seal replacement would cost a lot for labor.
  13. K

    Husqvarna 555 chainsaw

A new carb won’t fix an air leak assuming the dealer is talking about a crankcase air leak it requires a full tear down to fix usually. I don’t know how the 555 is built but depending how n that it could be a crankcase gasket leak between the case half’s or crank seals or base gasket on the...

Something else I haven’t seen mentioned here is don’t get hung up on just CC’s. A 50cc homeowner saw is almost always less powerful and also heavier than a pro saw which gives a better power to weight ratio to the pro saws. For example the Stihl 261 (pro) vs the Stihl 271 (homeowner). Both...

Yeah, you’re right. I am happy with it and it’s very well built. A bonus is that I use the chips for mulch, it’s not as pretty as the stuff I can buy but that’s ok. I only split 6” and up also, the rest I just leave un split and I stack it. Burns great in my solo stove.

    20 inch chainsaw recommendation

The 261 is a 50cc saw and a good one at that, punches above its cc class but running a 20” in big oaks taxed it and I wanted to be able run a longer bar. Put a 28” light bar on my 562 and it rips. Saves my back too.

I would wager it’s easier to do the plugs on my 3.5 Ecoobost than a 1970’s Ford, they are right on the top of the engine. Btw, the 70’s dentsides are my all time favorite truck.

The Gen 1 3.5's didn't have phaser issues that the Gen 2's did, chains wearing is the main issue with the timing set on the gen 1. Clean oil is a must in any new engine and sadly its the most overlooked since most MFG's are pushing 10K intervals now which is a problem.

would like comparison of string trimmers

The FS94 I had has been the only Stihl tool that I didn't like, it was finicky and not very powerful. My KM130 Kombi unit has been a workhorse and absolutely reliable for the 10 or so years Ive had it.

    Tow rope or chain.

Spent years in a line haul unit in the Army. Hauled millions of pounds of junk on 30,000+ miles of the worst maintained and most dangerous roads in the world in Iraq, we broke a lot of chains.

    Tow rope or chain.

This is just not accurate at all. I have witnessed many broken chains whipping and causing damage/ injuries.
  117. K

    Tow rope or chain.

I learned as a dumb teen that chains can be dangerous in a recovery situation. Flat towing is one thing but if there is a chance of any sudden loading of a chain, a strap is always better. Ive since only every carried a recovery strap, with loop ends only. Ive towed and yanked everything from...

    RimGuard: Front and rear?

In my opinion no, tire is too small to make much difference in weight and the likelihood of having flats is much higher on the front so the idea of having to deal with fluid filled flats sound like a pain in the butt to me.

Stihl 194 is 31.8cc and 7.3 pounds, Echo 2511 is 25cc and 5.2 pounds so not at all apples to apples. Not sure of the HP for each but the Echo is obviously much lighter and in my hands has better balance and ergonomics than the Stihl.

Recommended drill bits for hardened steel?

Ok, sounds like I could be a few different types and conditions of steel. A pretty safe rule of thumb is the file test. Take a metalworking file and run it across an edge of the steel you’re working on and if it skates right off the material without leaving a mark it will be too hard to...

  137. K

Usually it will tell you the payload rating which is basically the GVWR minus the trailer weight. At least the trailers I have list that. Otherwise find a CAT scale near you and weigh it.

Just saw my first $80,000 lawnmower

How else are they supposed to mow the grass? A push mower? It would cost us WAY more to pay someone to take longer to mow with an inefficient machine than to use the right tool for the job.
  140. K

    Is this BS or what?

I doubt many dealers if any actually transport for "free". They have to pay for the truck, trailer and the person to trailer it somehow so they will either charge a transportation fee or they will make it up in the cost of service or the price of the new machine.
  141. K

    1. These are made to mow, that's why they are marketed to lawn care companies who dont need a Swiss army knife of mowers, they ONLY need mowers. They would mow circles around a tractor day in and day out. 2. Not only can these large ZTR's fit easily on a landscaping trailer so they can be...

Bad Boy Zero Turn Safety Devices

You should just have to set the brake and shut off the PTO to keep the engine running. I wouldn't try to over ride the PTO safety.
  161. K

Pros to having a riding mower over a zero-turn

This is all true. My ZTR is almost as wide as the deck which is 50" so it is very stable on hills, but as you mentioned side hilling it has a tendency to want to slide if its too wet.
  162. K

Pros to having a riding mower over a zero-turn

This does show the ONE thing I can think of that a lawn tractor may be better at, steep hills. Though in my case my ZTR still handles my hills as good as my JD used to and actually doesn't bog at all going up them like my JD did.

My guess is to ensure it burns off any residual moisture in the engine. Either way I agree with some here. Just run it when you need it and keep up on maintenance and it will be fine. I'd rather use my tractor for 20 minutes here and there than not use it at all.
  169. K

Echo 2511T is an amazing saw!

It can be. Mine needed a little tuning after break in which is originally why I removed the limiters on the carb. If you can do buy do one mod though I highly recommend the 1/4” pitch conversion, cuts so much better than the stock 3/8” bar/chain that most come with.
  170. K

Echo 2511T is an amazing saw!

    Engine noise on new CX2510

It’s an old school mechanically injected diesel, they are loud and rattly. Unless you notice a lack of power or an unusual amount of smoke I wouldn’t worry about it. As for the three point, use the knob under the seat between your feet to adjust how fast the three point lowers.
